Quick Shifter For 999 Wanted.

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by Yazwaz, May 12, 2021.

  1. As title took my 999 on track at Oulton park and really enjoyed it. Would like to add a quick shifter if anyone has one they are not using I’d be interested for sensible money. Cheers

  2. Gearbox isn’t really designed for a quick shifter. There’s a good chance you’ll knacker it using one.
    Sorry fella

  3. Did the all conquering race bikes not have quick-shifters?

  4. Yes but the gear boxes also cost a ridiculous amount of money to cope with it.

  5. Didn’t know that. I’d seen them advertised quoting this model so thought it might be useful. It does clutchless shifts easy enough so I’ll stick with that then. Cheers for the info.

  6. What he said!

Plus they’ve only had a lifespan of something in the region of 1,000 to 2,000km before they were replaced. They were a much harder and stronger metal than those in the production machine.

The 916/998/999/1098/1198 gearboxes were all loosely related and the technology for a QS wasn’t really around on the road bikes until the late 1198 models. Even then, they were adapted for the use and set up with ultimately very forgiving time delays on the ignition power cut to allow the next gear to locate. If fitted with an aftermarket QS that wasn’t set up in this way (ie, set up instead for a super quick shift) they could crash the box in and lunch a gear or two and then you’re in for a rebuild and a new gear pack! You’ll be crying in your cornflakes if that happens!
The Panigale was the first Ducati production engine specifically designed for a QS (as opposed to adapted) the gears are bigger, further apart and harder specifically for that purpose.
The software and tech advances on the rest of the range mean that the QS “smart” shifter and blipper is what many/most models have now. In other words, harder you ride, rev and use the selector (at a given speed) the faster it allows the change to happen with the reapplication of power or engine brake.
    Hope that explains it.

  8. Some good info there. I’ll veer away from the clutchless shifts as well. I’m using the 999 coz I’ve had it for years and it’s got all the right kit on it and wasn’t really doing much. I’m only inters level and never going to be or want to be into the fast group much too old and lacking talent for that. Think I might have to save up for a 899 think that will do the job. In the meantime I continue with the 999 and treat it with a bit of care. Cheers all.
