I’m wanting to get the discs off my 899 and I just can’t budge them, don’t want to mangle the torx drive in the heads but I think they’re seized in,…best way to get them out please, heat? Impact gun?. Any ideas???
As above, soldering iron on the bolt, wheel on chocks and use a manual impact wrench if you have one. Next to none risk of mangling the bolts and less so the threads. When you have the bolts out it’s always a good idea to chase the threads through with the correct tap.
I’ll give the heat a go tomorrow, getting too late now can’t be arsed and that’s when you start to make mistakes
Give each bolt a smart tap with the torx bit. This may loosen any cak/loctite in the threads. Then try to carefully undo. An old fashioned manual impact driver is more effective than they are given credit for.
I replaced my discs on my 916 recently. Manual Impact driver, just a tap on each bolt and that did the trick, no hassle. The old discs had been on the bike for 20 years or so. I bought this a couple months ago and it’s really handy.
Facom makes really great tools. Pricey but top of the shelf quality. And they do sell manual impact drivers still. https://www.misterworker.com/en/facom/screwdrivers-hex-keys-bits/impact-screwdrivers/1876
Do NOT, under any circumstances, use an impact gun. It costs £40 to get bolts professionally drilled out when you screw the Torx splines and £4 to buy another Torx bit when you bugger it too. Listen to the voice of experience Andy
These tools were made for a purpose, and I doubt there are any great mechanics who doesn't have one in their tools kit.
