Cambelt Shelf Life

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Nasher, Jun 22, 2021.

  1. I've turned up a pair of cambelts that I'd forgotten I had.

I brought them from Moto Rapido around 5 years ago for an engine I was rebuilding.
The rebuild got stalled for a couple of years then I stupidly forgot about these and brought another set of new belts when I finished it off.

So these belts are at least 5 years old, genuine Ducati but marked as Gates, and have been stored in a dark drawer in the house since purchase.

I no longer have a bike they will fit, 900 Carbie Monster or SS, so the question is, do I stick them on EBAY with an honest description, or throw them in the bin?

  2. I see no reason why they would not be absolutely fine, I’d put them out there with an honest description.

  3. The responses you'll get here will mirror the reactions you'll get to the eBay ad. Some may be happy to go with them, given that they've not been used, others will shy away believing anything Ducati must be within a PCP lifespan, or not worth contemplating. I bought a brand new set of belts from eBay that were 14 years old because I had an engine that came to me with no belts. I wanted to strip and rebuild the engine, but with no firm plan for its employment, I could use the belts to set everything up and let it sit until I decided on what to use the engine in/for. Then once it was ready to be run, I'd buy new, fresh belts, rather than buy new to set the engine up, then have it sit for a couple of years, or longer.

  4. To my knowledge, 748RS, 22mm belts have not been manufactured since 2005 ish and you can still buy them, sold as new off eBay (not Ducati). Andy

  5. Thanks Guys

I'll put them in the for sale section on here for a couple of days before putting them up on EBAY.
