Good evenig A quick question. I am in the process of trying to remove the front forks from my 1198S, prior to getting them serviced (the MoT tester wasn't impressed with the fluid leaking from both legs...). As I'm sure most know, there are three M8 socket head cap screws each side. I can undo the top two (top yoke and bars) and the lower bolt on the bottom yoke (after taking off the side fairing and the "wind shield" thingy under the front fairing). However, none of the tools I have will fit on the upper bolt on the lower yoke - the air tube (?) is in the way. Is there any way round taking the front fairing etc off the bike? I seem to remember that is a right PITA. Thanks Andrew
It all comes down to your tool kit. If you’ve got nothing that will fit in the space, then for what it takes to remove the fairings and tubes, you’ll save yourself any hassle having to sort out rounded fasteners in the yokes.
Thanks Nelly, you're probably right. Even if I could get the bolt undone, I don't see any way I could get a torque wrench in there to tighten it up properly. Cheers Andrew
Not sure what you are trying to undo but I have just put new seals in my 1098 Having removed the wheel and loosening the clip ons I have an Allen key cut down to undo the lower yoke. The rest is easy dont need to remove the fairing
OK, that's one way it can be done (obviously!). Don't you worry about getting the torque right when you put it all back together?
I took my air tube off the other day to get at the radiator cap. Didn’t need to remove top fairing. Perhaps you could do that? Otherwise, bite the bullet and take the fairing off? Job’s worth doing etc.
Thanks, I'll give that a try. Great bit of design, all that disassembly just to get at the filler cap! Or a bolt...
