Hi, I bought my 1098 in may-ish 2020, saw it online and fell in love with it, drove down to darlington the next day and rode it home, It's my first ducati and to be honest at the time I didn't really know a lot about them (previous bike was a cbr600 and before that a selection of fast/interesting cars) this is what it looked like when I picked it up it's an 07 base 1098, with 70mm termi system, ohlins shock, ohlins steering damper, loads of carbon parts, renthal clip ons, speedymoto top yoke, DP rear sets etc etc.. I knew it had loads of nice bits on it when I looked at it and was finding extra parts I hadn't noticed for days afterwards. I also found a previous owners phone number on a receipt in the history, shot him a text and he called me the following day and told me the story behind the bike.. and asked if the dealer I bought it from included the stand, charger and all of the standard parts he'd given them.. they hadn't obviously it was obvious the engine had been apart at some point too as the cases are all powder coated grey and white, I emailed MotoRapido (given the hint from the previous owner) with the bikes registration number and they confirmed they did a full engine build in 2009, when the bike was 2 yrs old. as you can see the frame has been modified too to give adjustable rear-set mounts..
first things I needed to address, the brakes were shocking, wooden and juddering, so I bought and fitted some Brembo SA pads, and fitted a new seat cover to replace the knackered DP one.. and treated myself to a new lid. Also I bought a set of FAR mirrors to replace the sticky DP ones
Next I had an exciting oil leak, from the pressure sensor which vibrated loose, covering the outer edge of the rear tyre in oil luckily I was close to my dad's house, got it fixed and the tyre cleaned and back on my way.. I also bought a new chain and sprockets, decided to fit new pads and strip/service the eccentric hub while i was in there and fitted some new Fluro spherical bearings to the ride height adjuster, preventative maintenance.
The bike was off the road for winter by this point, so exhaust off for polishing and rear shock off for a service and respring Engine was given fresh oil and filter too and the new chain was fitted
I cleaned the air filter and all of the detritus out of the airbox then set about fitting the EVR 48t clutch kit
exhaust was polished and fitted bodywork was machine polished and a carbon seat under tray fitted along with some zircoflex heat shield to stop the exhaust melting it
I had very limited use of my right hand for a while which was less than ideal, so while I was off work I bought a roll of carbon, some resin and set about fixing the tail unit
got that far with the tail unit, haven't touched it since, i'm not sure if I'm going to use it again to be honest bought a new wheel nut to replace the bent one and a used rear axle to replace the damaged one then made a little stand on casters to make moving the bike about and working on it easier
while the frame was off I did the belts and valves, used Exact Fit belts and new Ducati idler/tensioners to replace the horrible plastic ones, I spent a while doing the clearances, getting them all perfect, not just 'in spec'
While the frame was off for powder coat I got into a little side project of refurbing all of the carbon bits, and carbon skinning some of the plastics
Repainted the tank too (was scratched in the crash where the clip on hit it and made a tiny chip in the paint)
new fuel filter, in tank length of submersible hose and made up two new flexi hoses with new ducati quick releases, wrapped them in DEI heat shield too sent the black bits off for matt black powder there's a new OEM corse hugger too.. new headstock bearings, refitted the yokes
had the exhaust cerakoted, I hate polishing and will never do it again now new swingarm bearings then refitted the shock/swinger
I had the rear disc vapour blasted to clean it up and fitted the axle got the 'gold' bits back from powder coat.. the LED lighting in my garage makes them look coppery, which I hate, but inside the house and in natural light they look right, the dark, matt gold I was looking for - the colour is 'Ferrari gold', same as the dark gold wheels on the 458 speciale I do, however, hate the clashing golds on the drive flange/sprocket/carrier, this is going. I couldn't resist pushing the up pipes on to see how it looks
Forks up next, stripped them down, sent the bottom brackets and slider tubes for cerakote, bought new seals/bushes/oil and ktech compression click adjusters, built them all back up and fitted them
starting to come back together now, got a replacement pazzo lever, Serie Oro discs, SR pads and a caliper rebuild kit with stainless pistons (stock ones plating had started to fail), all fitted and brakes bled up
