848 Help Please!!!

  1. Hi, recently bought an 848, 2008, red! this is from a dealer and he is being helpful in getting the problem resolved but the independent Ducati shop I use is busy for at least the next month, sun is out and I am impatient..
Problem is, bike starts perfect, revs cleanly and sounds good, as soon as you pull away it feels flat, possibly dropping a cylinder, this then comes back in as you give more throttle, it is not revs it is throttle opening..
Bike has Termis and correct ECU, lambda removed, once past this flat spot she runs lovely, first I checked the plugs, vert cylinder is black and sooted, horizontal looks good, injectors have been out, cleaned and swapped, test ride and vertical cylinder the same. swapped the plugs next and possibly the vertical cylinder looks better but I need to put a few more miles in.
Questions are... could a bad plug be causing this? should I fit iridium plugs? any other ideas would be welcome, strange it is inly one cylinder affected, this makes me think it is not ECU or sensor related as that would affect both..
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.....

  2. coil breaking down under load....swap ignition coils over see if that moves the problem.

  3. Hi
Commiserations but if you reckon it's dropping a cylinder then depending how long/how many miles ago* you bought this, dealer being "helpful" is the least he could do, and you possibly* need to take it straight back.
New plugs is the quickest way to tick off the breaking down possibility, but o.e.m. are fine, iridium plugs won't cure this.

  4. Think I had a similar problem with an 1198, im sure it was coil stick

  5. worth a go as said, but normally horizontal is more often the first to play up - was it so on yours?

  6. Still got the EXBV fitted?
If so valve could be sticking.

  7. Yes ,horizontal, catches all the road shite

  8. Hi, yes is still fitted and moving fine, I did try disconnecting the cables to leave the valve open but no difference to be had..

  9. Thanks, dealer is a long way from home, he said take it to a local specialist and he will pay, only issue is the wait..

  10. Unfortunately mine appears to be suffering similar issues! Starts fine, then drops onto 1 then back to 2 and so on. Once moving its not too bad but on low revs it cuts out and will start again on the button. Managed to get mine to the Duc garage - suggested coil issue? I'll know later this week..... and, yes the sun is shining and I'm also impatient! But the wait will be worth it; so dislike riding a bike off song.

  11. Had the same problem on my 1098R last summer, was akin to riding a bucking bronco at low speed and was more bonkers than normal once getting the revs up due to the 1 to 2 to 1 cylinder... Rode it for 30 mins before giving up calling MR, turned out to be spark plugs... Hopefully yours are that simple also..

  12. I had this kind of issue with my monster, did not like idling, would cut out, always restarted as if nothing had happened but started messing around a few minutes later. That was the regulator going south, fitted a new one and ran perfectly since.. Im thinking this is different, for one I can see the voltage on the display and it sits good at 14.2.. Id say plug or coil but it still does not feel right, it is too specific to the throttle opening, always idles lovely, goes flat as soon as the bike moves and sparks back into life at exactly the same throttle position regardless of rpm or speed, gear or how hard you are pushing..The issue with the monster took some finding but got there, this will be the same..

  13. I'm sort of hoping my issue will be plugs - cheapest option. It's booked in for new belts, airfilter and general service so what's a few more quid..... gulp.... I should know the outcome by Friday  On the up side I took the kwack out today - a tad fresh still but still enjoyable!

  15. Keep us posted. Be interested to know the outcome.

Maybe a throttle position sensor seeing as it happens in the same position irrespective of revs?

  16. Absolutely, lets hope..

  17. Terryphukwit - it would be an easy win if was just the TP sensor?
My 848 issue update goes like this:......apart from the battery being toast, both coil sticks are covered in oil, most likely leaking from the head covers which may be the cause of dropping one cylinder? Anyway, new belts, fluids and.... the airbox has finally been finally replaced due to the captive nuts rotating and being unable to replace the airfilter last time (a mega thanks goes to to AndyB :upyeah: for the replacement!!). And yes, it’s taken me that long to get it sorted - long story, but a new job means I've more energy, more time to ride and not neglect her (guilty as charged). She should feel like a new bike on collection unless something else crops up! Fingers crossed.

  18. Fingers crossed for you, frustrating when they go wrong but amazing bikes when everything is up and running.. Out of interest was the airbox full of dirt on the clean side, mine was and im not sure if its the Pipercross filter not sealing that well or just how it is, I have seen other threads with dirt in the airbox issues on 848s..

  19. at the risk of getting my wrists slapped for "knocking the brand" again, you are right, it is a design drop-off unfortunately. The "clampage" along the length of the filter is just about ok from new but starts to become limp over time resulting in air bypassing. As it's a known problem the top-end of the aftermarket manufacturers include extra "wadding" fwoabw to avoid this. If it wasn't for the worry of the nut inserts turning I would check mine more often. Have you put a tie-wrap through the "tongue" of your battery cover yet? This usually ends up popping out but mercifully the loose battery just jostles against the side fairing until you discover it. You need to put a small slit in the end of the tongue to get the tie-wrap fitted but left std apart from this.

  20. Hi Chris, spooky!! a cable tie has been fitted to stop the bottom of the battery tray dropping and allowing the tongue to pop out, I assumed it had been damaged at some time but apparently not.. We should create a new owners check list for all likely upgrades for a model.. any more tips like this would be appreciated..
