899 Panigale Exhaust Flake

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by nemo916, Jul 29, 2022.

  1. Hi guys,

Newbie here....Just picked up a mint 2015 899 panigale. 3000 miles only, showroom condition BUT one annoying little detail
On both sides of the exhaust cans, on the outlets, the heat resistant paint is flaking off.

I spoke to Ducati who said it need 'Ceramic coating' at about a cost of £300-400!! I was tempted just to strip it completely but I was told it may warp the fairing?

I cant be the first panigale owner to go through this, so wonder if anyone could share they experience and potential fixes

I will eventually get some terms, but only picked bike up a week ago, and 1.5k in new exhausts may get me a divorce haha

    Look forward to some guidance

    Nathan

  2. Do you mean the black cover/ insert that surrounds the exhaust outlet hole? If so mine was flaking off so I just repainted it with hi temp black paint and it been fine ever since.

  3. Thats the one buddy. Did you strip it first?

  4. Very common. I had two silencers replaced under warranty in under two years.

the standard paint is crap. There’s various options available in terms of something long lasting.

    ceramic.
    High temp paint.
etc etc. Don’t let a dealer do it, they’ll charge you the Earth.

  5. I scraped off any loose stuff, scotchbrite to give it a key, wipe over with thinners / brake cleaner then painted with PJ1 satin engine and case paint. Cleaned bike this morning and it still looks as good as new months later. :upyeah:
