Soak them in vinegar for a day or two. Gets rid of the oxide and you may be able to make a better judgement.
Service is 2nd to none. But does the master have a switch for the brake light? Thought they were track only masters.
Doesn’t come with one mate but not expensive to add one and only takes a few minutes to put on.as I’ve only just got this bike I’ll make do with what’s on there for now but will be putting the hell front end on at some point
Wow - thats good to know....ive just fitted a HEL rear master to my mates z1000 and he's dead pleased with it....(gonna get one of those)
So, dropped them down to Mr Cerakote last night (Dave - Techcoat) - if anyone wants anything done by him he works from home (in that his lock up is over the road) - hes a little way outside of Bristol in a village called Rooksbridge. Explained the problem. He seemed quite ok with it....i did tell him to blast them to the point that solid alloy was there and if it destroyed the caliper so be it (id rather know now) and bin them if i have to.... He just whatsapped some photos back...it appears the coaters didnt remove the old coating (fuckers) - hes stripped off the Nickel plating and uncovered the previous coating.! (ill be having words with the company that did them!) - everyone likes photos... And as you can see theres the original coating underneath and in turn the bare alloy under that....as i say its just the dust seal so as long as its held in im fine with that...
Yep - cost me 180 quid..! More photos.... Hes said essentially he can blast them...theyre going to be pitted but i should get a good coating over them.....i wasnt expecting to shell out 500 to a grand for new calipers now so if these last me another 6 months or so then thats fine at least i know the cost is incoming as it were....
So do you reckon this was 'salt' in the weather? It does seem strange as this hasn't happen on the Brembo calipers on my V-Raptor which I've used for at least 4 winters. Perhaps an issue with the original caliper coating? or what about a gentle weep of brake fluid from the seals that started the rot?
Could have done...cant say....these are an old set of calipers though...id hazzard 25 years old.....ive got a rear brembo on the zed as well, a nickel plated one as well, bought brand new a few years back...i notice that theres a slight bit of bubbling at one part of the caliper (About a few mm square)....but, now i know what to look for...!
Could be but thats a big complicated word youre using there....update: hes spending loads of time on the blaster and said although time consuming he was using a scalpel to lift off the top coat so im going to have them back and do the job manually....pfff - its never fucking easy is it...!
They're only fit for the bin sadly, I wouldn't even entertain the idea of refitting them. There's far too much material gone around the dust seal groove to be confident it's going to retain the seal properly and that the seal will actually stop detritus getting past it to the fluid seal.
Yep - im on the fence personally and agreeing with you but also thinking ill just have to clean them more til i get the money to replace them.
Anything like this is a better prospect than refitting the original ones.. I appreciate OP may not want to spend the money but a few hundred quid on new/used good calipers is nothing compared to wasting more money painting the rotten ones, fitting new seals and then having them stick on and losing the front end in the wet..
Cheers - thanks for that...its a possible (its a monblock so thats good) - ive been spoilt with HPK's and the controlable breaking force and feel that they give....i can stick on my paypal 0% but, i might go for either the HEL monoblocks, or risk a divorce and get a set of GP4RX's..... and go up again on the performance... Ive got m4's on the Hyper and while shit hot braking theyre very stabby....ive upgraded my old pre aprc RSV4's M4's with M50' along with the matching brembo lever and thats a nice feel....but id have to chance my master on the zed as well...
