Hello, I've just fired up my rebuilt 999..It has been fully stripped...cases opened etc. Bike starts fine and runs fine (or so it seems), however the oil light is illuminated up to 2500rpm. There are no funny noises, oil level is full to top mark (10W40), I have run up the revs reasonably high to see if it is just a "getting oil round" thing, but it seems to make no difference. Any ideas?? Suggestions warmly received. Thanks Grant
Could be a faulty pressure switch. These fit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/22179873...gyq9EtCRF2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY For the price it is a cheap thing to fit to see if the old one is faulty.
Cheers for the reply Chris, not a bad idea... It just seems weird that it would go wonky now of all times.
as above, the units manufactured later on, including O.E.M. can fail for no reason and at any mileage. I have around 3 spares at the ready.
Isn't Brexit hilarious... The oil switch is £3.32...shipping is £7.44 and import charges are £4.05!!! I guess I'm hunting local...
Be aware that a rebuilt engine will normally need the oil pump primed before initial start up. a couple of years ago I drained the oil from my 907ie at the start of winter and didn't refill with fresh oil until the spring. When I started it up the oil light didn't go out. I had a fair idea what as going on and reckoned that the oil pump had drained completely dry and was airlocked. So I removed the oil pressure sensor and using a squirty oil can pumped oil into the hole until it wouldn't take any more. I refitted the oil pressure switch and fired the bike up. The light went out right away and stayed out, much to my relief.
OK, so...worryingly... it's not the pressure switch! I'm at a bit of a loss here.. I also tried Derek's suggestion above...no change. Next on the list??
Oh dear, that’s not good. I freely admit to not knowing the details of the oil circuit and what could contribute to a low pressure however is it possible that an O ring could have been omitted during the rebuild which is allowing oil to escape internally thus reducing pressure in the circuit? Perhaps somebody cleverer could comment?
yeah, not good for sure.. looks like I'll be going back inside... still, any words of wisdom welcome..
Bought another. Also read on Ducati.ms about lowering the oil level... Don't believe it, but tried it. I think next test is a oil pressure guage to replace the sensor...
Oil pressure gauge is certainly the next step, but did you have the oil pump apart, and if so was the pressure relief valve located correctly?
