Rounded Disc Bolt Removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by yellowducmaniac, Oct 8, 2022.

  1. I want to get my 916 wheels refurbed, however after removing the front wheel i found that all the button head socket bolts securing the discs to the hub are badly rounded and will not budge, the Allen key (5mm) has no Purchace on them, i have tried soaking them in GT85 but short of getting a hammer and cold chisel to them whats the best way of getting them to move?

  2. It’s worked for me before….

Try putting a bit of rubber band in the hole to get more purchase?

  3. Heat and a Torx hammered in. I have used a paint stripper hot air gun with success. I would NOT be tempted to drill them out, tried it once and was very lucky but had to pay a man the second time. Andy

  4. Drill the head off. They are quite soft so a normal drill bit will make short work. Once the head is off the rest of the bolt usually comes out very easy, often by hand. From memory they are M6 so a 6mm drill bit is your friend. Once the head has come off it stops the drill going in deeper as the remnants just spin round and round and the drill won't cut deeper. Just go slow on the speed as the internal hex will otherwise knock the corners of your drill bit and dull it.

  10. Got out there this afternoon and had another good look at things, then suddenly remembered that i had seen some sort of extraction bit set in my late dads tools which i took when clearing out his garage - and came across this little Demon of a biting extractor bit, it screws into the socket of the cap screw anti-clockwise and bites like a good'n ,it made mincemeat of the screw heads but did the job quick time, i had to use it on 4 of the bolts, the rest came out okay - its probably tungsten carbide and its a tough little [email protected] done - thanks Dad.:upyeah:...i also ordered a new set of stainless bolts
