On the look out for a pair of five spoke Marchesini G5R gold magnesium rims for installation on a Ducati 998S. These could be either the street (with the ribbed spokes on the reverse) or the race (with the hollow spokes on the reverse) versions. Need to be in tip top condition with the original gold colour intact (not repainted or powder coated). Feel free to drop me a message in private if in possession of a pair to sell.
Do you mean the 5 spoke or 10 spoke type? I don't have any but am just trying to help clarify for others.
Think they are also termed interchangeably as G5R. Still looking and also open to 5-spoke aluminium rims of the same era in tip top condition with the original gold colour intact (not repainted or powder coated).
just out of interest what bike they come on? thought they were all light grey like the 996, or dark grey on the foggy rep??
Think that the five-spoke gold Marchesini magnesium rims (the early ones did not have ribs on the reverse of the spokes) were introduced as a race-only extra (as magnesium rims were not DOT approved) as early as 1995. The Ducati accessories catalogue of that era lists both the gold aluminium, as well as the gold magnesium rims, as an optional extra. Unaware if they came as standard with the SPS models of that time but most (if not all) the 1997 SPS I have personally seen are on gold mags.
There is a thread on here that posts correspondence with the original designer that debunks that theory. Ribs were added, as cracks appeared on the early non ribbed wheels. Andy
That is largely reported as being accurate: the ribs were indeed added by Marchesini at a much later stage of the product line of the five-spoke magnesium rims to address the cracking issue (around the hub area).
@Nick_996 just a heads up that there’s road or race version. The ribs in the spokes was an update from the original (non ribbed) type that sometimes showed signs of cracking when used on a race bike.
Can't see me having said otherwise above @bettes. By the way, any heads up in sourcing a pair, mag or all?
I am talking about gold Marchesini wheels across the 748/916/996/998 range, whether mag or alloy. As for me, I have set out to source a pair of five-spoke magnesium gold Marchesini rims but due to their rarity (particularly with their original gold colour intact and not repainted or powder coated), I have started to convince myself that a pair of five-spoke gold forged alloy Marchesini ones in like condition would be a good compromise.
Strangely I have just seen a pair for sale on a Ducati page on Facebook this morning. Halfway through typing I had another look 1) they are grey 2) $2300 3) they're in Ontario
Those installed by the factory at the point of sale for the non-special/limited release models were indeed that colour. The DP accessories catalogues did, as early as 1995, have a forged aluminium and magnesium options in gold available.
