After sitting for a while, I have gone for a ride out on the MTS yesterday. The ABS light remained on and DTC indicated to be off as a warning signal. I had to change one of the front brake line that was a little damaged. This meant having to wiggle the front sensor cable out and back into the mudguard (very fiddly). So, I am wondering if I have damaged somehow the front sensor cable in that process. Looking at it, it looks like the front sensor cable is part of the main loom, not a small subloom connecting into the main loom. So, I am looking for help on: - Do you know what could cause this light coming up? - Anybody has a way of verifying if the issue is coming from the front sensor by checking continuity, or is it needed to plug in the diagnostic? If I can isolate the issue there, I am probably rewire it into the main loom. But I would not want to start butchering the loom if this is not the source of the issues. Any thoughts?
If a main dealer’s workshop can get it wrong (see a recent thread), I’d double check the front wheel has been refitted with the phonic ring on the left (sitting on the bike). I do recall some time (long) ago, someone posted the traumas of replacing an ABS/TC sensor but I cannot remember what the outcome was. Andy
Yes, it is on the left and aligned to the sensor. The wheel has not been off between it working and it not working. However, recalling it, I rode it a couple of weeks back and it did not show (and that was after the work on the cross over brake hose).
You don't say which 1200 Multi you have and I can't be arsed to search back through your post history to find out but for the DVT at least the sensor is a separate part which plugs into the loom. See item #1, not cheap though! Just checked, the DVT and pre DVT use the same sensor, part number 55212121B Check that the sensor retaining bolt is secure, the gap between sensor and ring is critical. If the wheel was removed this needs to be removed to access the axle clamp bolts for retorquing (an Allen key just fits in to undo). Also check that the face of the sensor isn't damaged. Last year, in the south of France, my dash lit up like a Christmas tree and then the management light came on, this went out later that day. Once home I plugged it in and checked the diagnostics and it said there had been an out of range reading with the rear wheel speed sensor. I cleared the error and it never came back. Last week I serviced the rear hub and noted that the plastic face of the sensor was damaged plus some scoring on the phonic wheel and calliper bracket. It still works fine though. Guessing that some road debris or a small stone must have gotten trapped momentarily and caused the error? Potentially it could have been bad enough to fatally damage the sensor but in my case I got lucky. If you can get to someone that can read the error codes you might have a better idea.
Looks a lot more expensive if that is the issue... https://shop.oemducati.com/en/products/multistrada/2012-1/multistrada-1200-s/electrical-system-170
The front sensor wiring is a removeable item and the connector A is buried in the gap behind the headlight unit and in front of the frame, on the left hand side. Removing the fuse box shroud should give you a better look, the connector is adjacent to a block of 3 relays. Andy
Still the same sensor as the DVT as well as the 2014 (pre DVT) that I checked. Also on the 1260 too... If it's just a duff sensor then I'm pretty sure, after it's replaced, the likes of the OBDStar can clear the code on the 1200. Did it on my 1260 and the spreadsheet of its capabilities, although a bit vague, does show 'Code - Special Functions'.
Check the cable around where it runs under the mudguard. It’s quite common that after work on the front that it gets disturbed and ends up rubbing on the tyre and wearing through.
As it's a safety system, the dealers couldn't reset it and could only get the code from Italy. Both dealers told me this.
thank you for all this, it really gives me to go on with. I will try those things and revert. Might see a local garage as well to do a diag.
Only going on the rear speed sensor error I had on my 1260 last summer. Read and reset using an OBDStar tablet.
