Hi, I don't know if anyone can help please? Occasionally when I turn on the ignition on my 2010 Hypermotard 796 the orange engine management light stays on and the bike won't start, nothing happens when I hit the starter button. The way I have been getting around this issue is to turn the ignition off and back on again and keep repeating that until the orange engine light goes out, then it will start. I have been putting up with this for a while now, last 3-4 years. But recently it is doing it a lot more frequently and I am about to leave on a long trip in 3 weeks time so I need to sort the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem or have any ideas what could be causing the problem? Thanks in advance Stu
You really need to get the bike connected to a diagnostics programme, that will tell you immediately what the issue is so you know what needs to be repaired/replaced. Otherwise you’ll end up spending loads of time (and money) chasing your tail. It doesn’t have to be a Ducati dealer. Any decent motorcycle mechanic with Texa (or similar) should be able to interrogate the bike’s systems and uncover the fault. It will take about 15 mins to find out. Failing components, loose connections, etc don’t fix themselves, I’d get it looked at and sorted before you go on tour.
Update.... I don't seem to be having the issue with the spare key, well at least not so far. I will get the fault codes checked though anyway, hopefully they will be recorded
When the bike is turned on a magnetic current is created in the antenna which excites the chip in the key fob causing it to transmit a code which is read by the antennae. The fact your spare key works every time but your regular use key doesn’t every time makes me think you just need a new key and to have it coded to the bike. That’s good news as at least you can now go on tour with the spare key and not have either go through the on/off attempts or have to worry it’s something more serious that may fail.
