As the title, I’ve been watching used bike prices closely for years and mainly the damaged repairable bikes but in recent months the damaged repairable stuff is selling for near on the same as a non damaged equivalent. The last 3 bikes I’ve bid on and lost ended up going for undamaged money and then would still need repairs on top, I’ve been watching 2 Multistradas both the same year, the undamaged had slightly higher milage but loads of extra’s plus original parts with it. The bids on the damaged one are already a grand more than the undamaged one sold for! Am I missing something here or has the market gone nuts?
Yep, it’s been crazy for a few years, I like to rebuild a damaged bike every year, normally around this time to give me something to do whilst the weather is poo. But had the same issue, people paying stupid money for damaged and not factoring in, you will take a 20-25% hit on resale, and you have to fix it. I have also found the used part prices on eBay and from breakers are dearer than new. A few years ago, would buy very few new parts, normally nuts and bolts for a rebuild, but just finishing a multi and apart from a head light it’s been £3k in new parts and these all were cheaper from the dealer. I noticed it went mad during the first lockdown and has continued from there.
I’m the same as you I like to do one rebuild a year . I remember when eBay started and the breakers suddenly had to drop their rip off prices to compete on parts but now it’s slowly got back to how it used to be as you said breakers charging more for used parts than new. I’ve called out a few of them for doing it but I just get a shitty reply off them .
The damaged Multistrada ended up selling for £1500 more than the undamaged one. If I ever sell any of my bikes I’m going to push them over first to increase their value!
I'm trying to sell an engine at the moment. Cheaply in my opinion. I get no interest at all. Perhaps I have to put the price up.
A few years ago, I bought an ex Off Road School GS from BMW. At the time, a new GS was around £10k, I bought this off them for about £6k, spent a grand or so doing it up, rode it over the winter then sold it for a nice profit. But now, they sell them for near on showroom money, so it's not worth the bother any more.
I know in recent years, new bike (and car) deliveries have been affected by the availability of bought in components. For a long while, the availability of Akrapovic exhausts and Öhlins suspension was Ducati’s achilles heel and the availability of computer chips hit hard. Apparently, it’s currently TFT screens that are like rocking horse poo. The aftermarket suppliers have clearly jumped on the bandwagon but as has been said, the pendulum has swung too far and dealer sourced parts are now competitively priced. I’m still finding the “good, used” bike market has been stagnant to static for months and now winter is setting in, almost non existent. Andy
Just been to look at a f850 gs that was up for sale with Cotswold Bmw for £6100 , the ad suddenly disappeared and a very similar bike came up with my local bike shop in Malvern for £6800. It’s the same bike. I asked why it had gone up £700 in value since leaving the main dealer and he then offered me it for £6400. Shame I’d have bought it for £6100 off Bmw
Is that the well known bike dealer that has very nearly every bike ever made. Think it’s bikes4u or some such.
Yes that’s them (motorbikes4all) I don’t usually go anywhere near dealers, it’s a bit overwhelming when you walk in to a sea of bikes. Lots of tat in there though
