I have a 2008 1098S, I rode last week and rode a little rough when getting on throttle; Went to turn on today and would crank over but would not start at first. After a few cranks I was able to get it to run; sounds like a ticking noise with valve train. I purchased it with 7500 miles and no valve adjustments had been made; it currently has 10750 miles. Looking to see if anyone has had this exact noise.
That my friend is a worn clutch basket and plates , my bike did the exact same thing around 10k miles, and you can tell because the noise changes when you pull the clutch in. Take the clutch cover off and look at the basket to see if the plates have worn notches into the basket , if so then that's where your problem is.
I’ m not disagreeing with you @james bazel but why would that affect the starter? I have a similar aged 1098 so just want to know what to look out for?
I agree this should have nothing to do with the starter , and it is possible there are 2 different problems or I could be completely wrong. I just remember my bike making the exact same noise and changing frequency when pulling the clutch lever in and out , It is a easy check that would probably take 10 or 15 min.
Sounds like a low battery (Dash says so as well) which is making it reluctant to start, the rest of it sounds just like a standard Ducati clutch rattle to me. I wish my bikes were that quiet and they both have good condition clutch baskets with a decent throttle set up
I also believe it to be some kind of valve train issue; Which side are the pulley bolts located??? New to the Ducati world.
Perhaps, my mechanic is replacing the spark plugs and hopes it will fix the issue. It doesn't even start anymore, one of the cylinders doesn't fire up.
Fit a new fully charged battery and replace the original weedy cables for decent ones and possibly think about fitting an extra earth cable from battery to engine and all will be ok.
