Petrol Tank Gets Mighty Hot!!!

  1. It's been hot here recently into the mid 30's already so my Monster Dark620ie is parked up under cover mainly in the shade but not totally. Had it running today for a while got the oil up to 106 c and I was messing about with the rear shock figuring out just how it was set up so climbed onto the bike in just shorts and the tank was hot getting so that it would not take long before it was too hot to grip with the thighs/knees while sititng in the normal riding position.

Now the insulation that should be under the tank is missing so have rigged up some from engine bay insulation thta was ment for the long intake pipe for the airflow meter in a TVR Chimaera and a sun screen reflection cover for a car windscreen. Need to find the proper insulation before too long but the question is just how hot do the steel petrol tanks on the Monster get?

  2. Too hot to grip with the thighs; when have i heard that before?

  3. Black tank in sunlight will get hot.

Maybe cover it for 20 mins before you use it?

  4. My Enfield tank was silver in India and that was still always the golden rule, don’t touch the fucker with your bare legs or you will get burnt and curse to fuckery.

  5. So your suggesting that one cannot ride in the summer as let's face it there is not always shade to park under and the bike was not parked in direct sunlight it's parked in the vestibule which is the entrance to our place between the two barns

  7. Thank you Mr Obvious  unlike many I do not ride in shots, swimwear or nothing however I also do not have "abestos" lined jeans, trousers, or leggings am in the process of gathering my PPE for riding:_

    Helmet .... Yep LS2 Rapid 11 .... FF353
Jacket .... on route bought two vintage leather motocycle jackets from the UK
    Gloves ... Bogotto leather gloves
Boots ........ Nope not as yet
Bottoms, leggings, jeans ................... nope onlly have normal day wear for now. Looking into this and what size I actually need.

Hmmmm might be an idea to look into tank pads .

  13. Where did I say don’t ride in Summer?

It’s a black tank. Dark and black stuff absorbs heat thus it will get hot.

if you can’t find shade throw something over it to stop it getting hot IS what I’m suggesting.

If your legs are getting hot because you’re wearing shorts, the heat will be the least concern if you have an off.

  14. OK it;s decided that knee pads for the tank are going to be acquired and fitted now we just have to find some that fit and don't look dreadful of course th 620 being a little out of favour with main stream is going to make it harder to find the right ones.

  16. You might have to rivet or use self tappers to keep the knee pads fixed, cos if the tank gets that hot the adhesive will keep getting soft and the pads will come off.

  17. You can still buy the OEM insulation pad for the Monster 620ie. I replaced the one on my wife's bike a while back after it basically disintegrated over time. It by design, just velcros into place on the underside of the tank. It is not overly expensive. You can try MotoRapido in the UK. They can easily source you one if you need it.

  18. Well a
quick search come up with nothing for the 620 and yes it still have the bits of velcro under the tank as can be seen in the attached photo. Of course those will probably be lost when the tank is repaired and resprayed

  19. Indeed 46 degrees C is the most that I have seen personally as yet but we are already into the mid 30's t around 46-37 degrees C so maybe this year it will be hotter still only time will tell.

  20. Yes I had thought that there might be issues affixing them but as some bikes do have them there must be adheshives that work it's just finding out what they are.
