Hi all, having just been a bit ham-fisted in adjusting one of my mirrors and cracking it, I was wondering if anybody has any tips (be more gentle, etc already considered) on where best to get replacement mirror glass from. not tried the main dealer yet, so maybe somebody has experience of something like this and found it was only thirty bob from them. help and pointers appreciated, piss-taking will be chortled at. thanks, pete
from memory, there is a philips screw that tightens the ball socket, accessed from the hole at bottom of mirror. I'd use a smear of grease/vaseline when fitting the new glass, also don't over tighten the screw otherwise it's difficult to adjust the mirror and they crack!!! Not sure of the cost of replacement glass, might be cheaper getting a repo- mirror and using that glass??
That is exactly what I did, i.e. over tighten the pivot nut. Getting hold of reasonable condition mirrors at reasonable prices is a big pain (as I found when trying to replace a mirror after dropping the bike at 2mph!). As the glass stick to a self adhesive sponge section, I am hoping to get a mirror glass for a few quid rather than £30+ for a mirror unit.
You can get the stick on glass though, not sure what quality they are though. ducati stick on mirror 916 glass | eBay I have original spare glass for both sides, but reluctant to sell.
Those "stick on mirrors" are the right ones - that's how they fix onto the plastic ball! You need to scrape the old broken one off and then stick the new one onto the plastic...
my 998 uses the same fixings for the mirror bolt as the fairing screen bolts, normally they are just a small phillips screw. So if you can't get it undone then you might want to try the fairing tool in the tool kit. I had a number of mirror glasses made up by my local glass shop, I gave them a template and had several sets made up at the same time at a few quid per glass. I have used them all up now due to colour coding several sets of mirrors.
