Ninja speed broadband?

  1. At work we've just moved to fibre optic broadband and speed testing shows that our speeds have gone from 6-7mb download speed to over 75mb consistently.

However I can't tell any difference at all when surfing the Internet. Why's that then?

  2. You can only stream porn to a certain speed eh?

  3. You won't see much difference just browsing. Downloading films etc however you will. When I had 50meg cable, with a good host I could get a film in a couple of mins.

now stuck with shitty 6meg sky which is w&@k!

  4. I get a steady 30mbps at home, but I still can't stream videos properly. Must be down to the shitty processor in the computer I reckon.

  5. The internet is a complex series of connections between you and the site you are visiting. It will only ever be as quick as the slowest link in that chain. Sometimes it may be a popular site just doesn't have enough bandwidth to connect its server to the network, or it could be that your connection at home gets choked up by several devices streaming at once (which is what happens in my house).

A useful tool is www.speedtest.net and they have an app too. Use it to check your local speed. If all is good then slow web site access is probably due to issues at the server end beyond your control.

  6. It would have to be quite an old computer to not stream video properly. Are you using WiFi to connect to your router? If so try your computer closer to the router or wire it directly using an Ethernet cable.

Your WiFi may not be set up to run optimally.

  7. No, it's a wired router, my cPad (it's like an iPad, but Cheaper...) works perfectly on the wifi, so it must just be an issue with my desktop.

  8. Faster broad band does not make your "computer/Ipad/Lap top" any faster.

Probably the only difference you will notice, is how quick a file down loads .... but, then only if its a big file.

  9. So, aside from deleting temporary files, clearing cache, etc, how does one speed up one's computer..?

Mine goes as quick as a council roadworker:frown:

  10. Try the www.speedtest.net site first to see what kind of throughput you are getting. If you are getting anything above about 2.5mbps then you should be able to stream from iPlayer and the like. If you can't stream then its likely to be your video card. How old is the PC?

  11. Tried that, 30mbps regular as clockwork, but it doesn't make it to the computer screen. Videos are jumpy and slow to load. The computer's pretty old, maybe 6 years old, and it ain't ever gonna be the quickest, but it seems to be getting worse. I've tried shutting down anything that doesn't need to run, but it doesn't make much difference.

  12. Would it make Skype clearer picture wise?

  13. The reality is that your PC probably isn't slowing down. Its just that software developers tend to write programs to take advantage of the latest hardware so processor intensive and memory hungry applications on some older hardware can struggle.

Its probably a combination of slow processor, not enough RAM, and a slow video processor. 6 years is pretty old tech.

  14. Skype will automatically adjust sound and picture quality to suit the line speed. It will degrade video quality first thing in an attempt to maintain decent sound levels. As speed comes so the video quality will improve.

  15. Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. Thankfully the cPad handles anything the desktop can't.

  16. And to add to the above, some providers "throttle back" but will not admit it.
