Hi Everyone, I am a new member here but have been lurking for about a year. I bought a used 1198 a little over a year ago, that ran but had issues starting. With the help of some older posts I was able to get the bike starting and running pretty good. I rode it a handful of times and then it started having an issue where it would die at a stop light but only after it warmed up. Then it was impossible to start again until it cooled down. (This left me stranded a few times) So back to the forum again, I found some older posts about the starter clutch and decided to replace it. While I was doing the starter clutch I decided to change out the starter too. Well when I removed the idler gear and the idler shaft, I noticed the hole for the shaft had been elongated/deformed and the bolt holding the idler shaft in place was bent. I read in one of the posts that you could potentially use Loctite retaining compound and this would resolve the issue. Has anyone done this? Is there any other way or better / stronger way to fix this issue? Other than replacing the engine case? Any advice would be appreciated! Oh, I also decided to fit some Ohlins FG43's and Harris Racing Triple Clamps while I have the bike apart but this might be another thread, since neither of these parts were intended for this bike...I have it mostly sorted out, except for the brake caliper adapters.
Oh shit! I've heard good things about thread 'repair' using this Loctite compound: https://parts.agcocorp.com/us/en/p/...09EAZRBufD_nKwTMsGTmOqR8uNYJdUOxoC1AYQAvD_BwE
The 1198 should have a pin that engages into the alternator cover, to support the end of the pin. You can get the hole bored out and sleeved.
Thank you, I will look into this. Any idea how much force the shaft would be put under? More than 128 foot pounds?
Do you know if I would need to remove the engine to do this? I am thinking that a sleeve and the correct loctite might be a good solution. Any idea where i can find a sleeve or what metal i should use for this?
I think I found a sleeve, should have it in a few days. The one item I cannot seem to find is how the pin fits into the hole on the cover side. I seem to be missing a piece and all of the parts diagrams that i have seen do not show this piece. Here are some pictures for reference.
Can’t help you I’m afraid but I am intrigued by the engine number you have: XBLA006403. Doesn’t appear to follow standard ZDM….type numbering.
I did not realize this was not standard. I know it matches what I have on the pink and the reg though.
I drilled, sleeved the hole with retaining compound. Will let this cure now, while I wait for my new starter to arrive.
Wow, I was afraid of something like this, thank you very much for this information! Just to be clear, are you saying there is no Allen bolt that threads into the engine case , holding the idler shaft in place? I’ll start looking for this cover now, thanks again for the detailed information and part number!
I ended up sourcing a new engine from ebay and finally got it installed. I was able to ride the bike but I forgot to tighten the ECU ground cable and left myself stranded. Ended up pushing the bike about 3 miles to a friends house. Got the bike home a couple ago and fixed my mistake. Then i decided to reflash the ECU and now the bike won't turn over at all. I was getting an IMMO error, that went away but I am still not able to turn the bike over. Does anyone know if I need to run a map that specifically gets rid of the IMMO? I cannot seem to find this map anywhere. The bike only came with one key and no code card. Any ideas?
FYI, I did purchase a matching 1198 ECU that will be delivered today but I am guessing this will not fix my issue. The ECU that came with the bike is from a 1098, I don't think this makes a difference but thought i would mention it.
10 out of 10 for perseverance bsully, can only think of input from @chrisw that might help with your latest problem.
thanks! well, i did sell 1990 GSXR750 project, so this freed up some time and space for the ducati. plus, every time i ride this bike, i have the biggest smile on my face. its not like any bike ive owned in the past. i originally bought this bike to flip or part out but i honestly dont think i will sell it now...
