Hi all, My bike, 1200 MTS ABS (2013), has broken the gear selector return spring. There are 3 special tools quoted in the manual, one is a puller to remove the alternator cover, one locks the flywheel to let you undo and torque the nut and one is a measuring jig. I am happy with making a puller and thing I can measure and trial & error the jig but Because of the high torque loads I want some advice on the tool to lock the fly wheel. Has anyone found an alternative way to lock the flywheel than shelling out £150 for the recommended tool? Does anyone have a pt no 887133367 tool from an old bike sitting in a draw they no longer need and willing to sell / loan? Ta for any advice regarding carrying out this job, including how much a dealer might charge me
Are you sure you need to remove the flywheel? If it’s the spring I think you mean it's inside the alternator case just above the front sprocket?
Does that mean I can get it out without removing the fly wheel - the manual implies the flywheel needs to be removed for access. If not that simplifies the job massively
Flywheel has to come off in order to remove the shifter linkage. You can’t change the spring without…
You may also need the alignment tool for when you reinstall the gearchange mechanism assembly. I did one engine by eye and it was fine, the next one required the tool for some reason... Ps: I may well have bought that tool from the same place.
Apologies for bum steer - looked at my notes and realise that when this happened to my 749 back in 2010 I removed the alternator cover then realised that the flywheel needed to come off so took it to a specialist to do!
