Seat Lock Won't Turn

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by gurth, May 28, 2025.

  1. My seat lock refuses to unlock with the key.

Instead, I need to remove a side panel and force a screwdriver into the latch of the lock and the post attached to the seat, separating them.

Once separated, the lock turns with the key and a little persuasion, but I can't see what is snagging and preventing it from working correctly. I have applied a generous amount of WD-40 to the offending area, but the lock still doesn't work once the seat is attached.

Has someone come across this problem before and solved it?

Do I need to remove all the parts entirely and realign?

  2. I believe there is a little bit of adjustment in the bracket holes, this may help to reposition.

From memory I think I pressed down a little bit on the seat to relieve the pressure on the latch and then kind of jiggle the key as you turn it.

    Cheers Gaz

  3. Pressing down whilst simultaneously turning the key does help relieve pressure on the lock mechanism and allow ease of operation, although I suspect something more sinister is at play here.

  4. If it is the cam type lock barrel, you can remove the screw and belville washer and position the operating lever one notch further away to increase the tension on the cable, then replace the washer and screw. Running some 3-in1 oil down the cable sheath itself might also help and/or grease the barrel lock. The latch plate itself would also benefit from some grease, especially if the plating is oxidized or corroded.

  5. Yep that was always the fix with mine, press down on the seat.

  6. You were right - a good push down on the seat while turning the key saves the day. I was comparing the Ducati to my other bike, where I turn the key and you virtually have to be ready to catch the seat popping off.

  7. A good dab of grease and oil may have helped too.

  8. I just hit the seat down and twist the key at the same time. Similarly I always check that it is home by hitting it. Don't ask me how I found this out.

  9. I find the passanger grab rail blocks easy key access on my SS. I often have to remove th key from my keychain otherwise it is too tight to get into the lock and turn.
