Hi, my son’s 797 has arrived and I’ve duly ridden it for him to check it over so to speak…. One thing of note is that on starting, the turnover is really slow although the bike fires into life almost immediately. Is this normal ? I’ve put an optimate on it but as the power supply is via an extension lead some way from the garage I wondered about removing the battery to keep it on charge long term. So, 2 questions. Is it normal for the starter to be slow? And, can you just remove the battery or will the ecu or something electronic have a meltdown as the power supply would be removed? I’m old school and know nothing about electronic brains etc Thanks in anticipation. Nick
Yep all v-twins tend to be slow turning over, but as you say, invariably fire in to life. I fit the upgraded power cable kits to my Ducs, just to give it the best chance possible…. Available here, made by our own @exige https://www.ducati.tech/exact-start-premium-starter-cables/
To reassure you - the ECU won't have a problem if/when you disconnect the battery. However, if the battery is in good condition - and that's the first thing to establish - it's good to keep it on a battery maintainer (NOT a trickle charger) 24/7. Upgrading the battery/starter leads is a good thing, as per @spenny_b link above, as our starter motors need all the help they can get to roll the big twins into life!
Thanks to all the responses. Are the starter motor cables shared with other models ? I can’t see any specific to the 797 re. the link. Thanks
I expect there'll be commonality with the other air-cooled Monsters - probably depends on battery location. Drop him a line - he'll have the answer...
