Hi Guys, I have taken the complete bike apart (748) for painting and replating and removed this Alarm. Do one of you clever guys know if i need to cut any of the wiring out of this to put back into the loom or is this a self contained plug and play alarm that i just discard? Stu
I can see a couple of Ducati-type plugs but are all wires thinner gauge than Ducati loom and black? - this will confirm. Another clue will be, that each (Ducati original loom) wire-run that has been broken into should emerge as loose ends that just need connecting back up again by matching colour for colour.
Hi Chris, Yes the wires are thinner and black heres a pic It just look like its a single item, but as you say those Ducati Connectors must go somewhere.
someone else will confirm but i think that might be for the diagnostic port so not needed apart from this. If you peel off the insulation tape (serves no purpose), you might discover more e.g. - plug might have been crudely dismantled etc.
If I were you I’d reinstall it and make sure the bike runs then cut it out, the Evo is a simple alarm but it looks like it’s been integrated into the wiring loom so you might need to rejoin some wires. Took me hours to remove a Datatool system 4 red alarm
Each to their own, but i definitely would not re-install it. i love this job mostly, i would almost do it for free. When i removed my own i would always end with the ritual of dropping the box in a bucket of water as the internal battery would kick in, sounding the alarm. The alarm would go on for a few minutes sometimes.
When I took a data tool alarm off my 1st 95 916 it was just an exercise in plug and play. None of the original loom had been modified to fit the alarm so just had to reconnect the factory connectors back together.
The internal batteries are crappy ni-cad and they fail, which mine did, the system 4 red is not plug and play. The EVO the OP has should be plug and play but it looks like it’s been spliced into a loom
The first thing that usually failed on the early Datetool alarms was the mercury movement sensor "switch" usually because the mercury became polluted.
Thanks for the replys guys, i didnt really want to re instal the alarm so will try without to begin with
it makes no sense to do this? it looks like a routine removal, absolute piece of cake and if you check route of loom removed you will find Ducati plugs are almost certainly superfluous.
I agree with Chris, just get rid. Datatool and Spyball alarms were more trouble than they were worth back in the day, and always ended up failing. That and questionable fitments and soldering / splicing / bodging always made removing them a complete pain in the arse.
If those connectors are the brown n white original loom under the seat, left hand side then they need to be ‘looped’ joined together to run.
