So what have you done today..?

  1. I put huge time and money into the place last year. They’ve only been in 10 months and it’s just a couple. Until now they’ve been entirely reasonable, and so have I, so not expecting any heavy refurb work.

However, 3 weeks notice is not reasonable. Hey ho.

  2. It’s difficult but these things happen even with all the safeguards in place
Part of HMRC description of being self employed is there has to an element of risk. Dealing with tenants can at best be like herding cats, they after all have free minds and ambitions.
The last refurbishment I carried out was in at the beginning of July. The tenant in question, moved in on a strong recommendation, turned out to be a fully blown alcoholic. Within four months of tenancy he had absolutely wrecked the place losing his bowel functions and walking excrement all over the new carpet. The new bed, new sofa were also trashed.
The smell in the hallway was stomach turning and concerning the other tenants in the house.
One night the ambulance service split the door and casing in half rescuing him during one his many heart attacks
On the fifth month I served him notice to vacate on the last day of his tenancy, to which surprisingly he accepted
I have to add he didn’t get behind with the monthly rent during his stay, no arrears were accrued
After he had vacated I filled the trailer and van went to the tip.
It was sad to see all his family photos and personal belongings left behind including tokens from the Alcohol Anonymous for previously being dry.
I had the strong feeling this would be his last tenancy
I redecorated refurbished throughout and it’s now relet on a higher rent.
Carpets and furniture alone cost over £2k
not including repairs and redecorating costs.
I kept the deposit although this was a small offset to the outlay.

So yeah like you say, hey ho
Shit does happen, thankfully not very often.

  3. Yep, it's buttered, then toasted under the grill in a pan, also full of butter!

  4. And add black pudding! That was a "breakfast for 2", hence the pan and plates on the side. I was dubious, hence the chorizo hash, but it was pretty filling.

  5. I jointly ran a letting and management firm in the noughties and we had a few tenancies which went pear shaped, including a house being turned into a cannabis farm, which (after I’d left, I hasten to add) led to one of my former underlings, rather stupidly, driving around north London in the firm’s sign-written black cab with hundreds of plants stuffed into bin bags, looking for somewhere to dispose of them. That would have taken some explaining if he’d been stopped by the Police. :D

  6. Thanks for the "recipe". Wow that sounds like it is delicious. I learnt ages ago when working in restaurants, when cooking, almost everything tastes better with a little butter added. Not too sure bout the health effects though!

  7. Got all my kit out of the loft and checked my tent ready for next week. Note to self… make sure the tent is dry before putting it away else it goes mouldy.
Bit of spray bleach and it’s all sorted.

  9. Booked two more shows at the Theatre Royal Bath, so that's me done for the year. All Thursday afternoon matinees, so no crappo Sundays in Bath where the Park & Ride busses stop ridiculously early. I miss around Christmas time and early New Year as that is panto-shit time and I don't do panto-shit.

Next, I will start looking to book a hotel and ferry to Kirkwall in the Orkneys. I don't feel like doing Gloucester to Aberdeen in one go so may take a day or two rest days - possibly Newcastle that is another place that I've never visited!

  10. Not very good at this game! Cracked in less than twenty-four hours! Booked this in Bath, "The Woman in Black"- 04 December 2025

No need to worry, me man of wealth - well, one day!

  12. Had to look him up and still have no idea who he is. Never heard of him, not read anything he’s written in the motoring press or seen him on TV. Clearly very famous :joy: Andy

  14. There’s the reason, I stopped watching Top Gear when William Woollard left. Andy

  15. Well its ironic that i stopped watching Top Gear after Clarkson and co left...ive started watching Chris Harris on his You Tube channel...he can say what he wants and not restricted by the BBC...

  17. No so much what I did today, but what I did last night & what Mrs GG did today...

Yesterday, Mrs GG got the end of contract email from Virgin Media telling her that our monthly fee was going up from £104.70 to £219 :scream: She called and was told they could do £137 per month; no thanks, I want to speak to customer services. But that's the best price madam; no thanks, I still want to speak to customer services. She gets put through & gets offered our current package on a 2 year term for £96 per month + the usual annual bump, which she happily accepted.

My part in this? The previous evening I'd gone through Sky's website to get a price (£141 pm) and had gone through the sign up procedure as far as Sky sending Virgin an email telling them we were leaving; I then changed my mind & aborted. Mrs GG found one this morning from Virgin asking if we were leaving and what steps they needed to take to stop the contract.

Obviously I'm claiming some credit for making Virgin think we were off; she is having none of it & is claiming full credit for the reduction.

The one thing that does come out of it is what a bunch of shysters we have selling us TV, or Insurance, or just about anything these days. there ought to be laws against it.

  18. Got a text today from O2 telling me I'd used 80% of my data & advising me how to buy more. I went onto their app to find out when the current cycle was up & whether I needed to, and found out that I could potentially upgrade my package. Turns out I can upgrade to 80Gb per month from my current 6Gb. Went through and did it, though I have to confess to a nervous wait whilst the credit check investigated whether I could afford the £16 per month fee; quite why they need a credit check when it's 80p a month less than I am currently paying...

  19. After your games with Virgin and Sky, word got out, and you're clearly not to be trusted, hence the check. To be sure...

    :joy:
