Hi All just purchased a 1991 750ss which has been garaged for a few years and I’m in the process of recommissioning. As you can imagine being old now there are a few things that have been lost to time. One such thing is the air filter, an aftermarket one was supplied to me which an already modified airbox cover. It has a dynajet sticker on the airbox, however the air filter supplied is touching the frame before I refit the cover, is this filter wrong or does the cover require further modification? cheers Sean
Have you got the filter fitted the right way round? That is a K&N filter which goes hand in hand with a Dynojet carburrettor mod assuming it's been done correctly. It's a better filter than the original and pretty much lasts forever with careful cleaning. It is the correct filter so should fit flush with a bit of patience. Air filter lid mod is also part of the aftermarket modification.
Have a look on this link for more info:- https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/air-box-mod.16428/ The post by Zimbo is particularly useful.
Thanks for posting the link, I’ve had a look at the thread and can’t find anything about clearance? I’ve had another look at the bike and taken some more pictures I’m still unsure whether to cut the box, or if the air filter lid is even the correct one, it doesn’t seem to marry up to the housing like I would expect most boxes to do. I do have a pair of mikuni carbs fitted, could that be an issue when it comes to space?
I still can't tell from your pictures, but have you put it back the same way as it was when you took it off? I think it will be fine if you just do some research like I have. Mikuni 38's were standard.
Unfortunately, it came already removed, so I’m not sure of its original placement. I’ll have a look online to see if I can find anything. thanks for your help mate!
above picture shows standard filter box before yours was chopped. Do you have the four spring clips? filter top always was a close fit on the frame, but look underneath to make sure that the lower filter body is sitting on the rubber elbows properly linking them with the carburettors
Mikuni BDST 38 carbs are OEM, and recollect that the airbox is secured to the frame with bolts at four locations, so you can check if the airbox is correctly located. Might be a daft question, but do you have the four spring clips that hold the two halves of the airbox together, with the filter sandwiched between the box and the lid when the spring clips are installed?
If it isn't the correct filter it's highly unlikely to be exactly the same overall, length by width, dimensions. like Chris mentioned it simply looks upside down to me, The filter should fit inside the box rather than sit up above it. I'll see if I can find an image of my old one. .
Nope, apologies, you are right, the filter should stick up into the cover rather than be down in the box. This image of my old M900 shows a K&N in the same Air Filter box as the SS. I made a simple Aluminium frame and did away with the cover all together.
it's best to avoid cutting anything, can you put a picture up of what you are thinking of cutting? It does sound as though there's something not quite in the right position.
I vaguely remember that mine fits one way, but if rotated 90° about it's axis does not...the filter I believe isn't perfectly square.
