  1. I'm still wondering whether there was a gasket on that engine cover and if so was it some form of liquid Permatex type stuff... can you imagine the job of 'painting' that on :grinning:

  2. Along with the jet engine & computer as part of the US/Canadian post war financial aid package perhaps.... : unamused:

  3. All Septics are a sucker for that kind of thing. It's not "done" to walk through the Inns while robed as it is seen as a bit gauche, but sometimes while appearing in the RCJ you need to collect something from Chambers or go to the library when there isn't time to change and in those situations its not at all uncommon for American tourists to take photos or even ask for a selfie.

  4. Oooo - just had a twinge of nostalgia and latent nicotine shakes...

  5. My grandad (who was one of those men, except he wore blue overalls) used to smoke them and that photo brought back memories of the smell of my nana and grandad's living room which was a melange of woodbine smoke, dog, stewed tea and that peculiar odour that old gas fires used to give off (and was probably lethal in large quantities). He was an extremely funny man who had a way with words, but very irascible too, which only made him even funnier. He was also far too clever to have left school at 15 in order to become an apprentice welder, but that was your destiny in those days.

  6. Town gas. When I was much younger, we were told Town gas was supposed to have something added that would make you puke before you suffocated. Didn’t stop my lunatic paternal grandmother from sticking her head in the gas oven for attention seeking on a number of occasions. Andy

  7. That must be an early memory because I was born in 1970 and according to t'interwebs coal gas had been completely phased out by 1977 and replaced with natural gas.

  8. I was 16 in 1970, ya young whipper snapper :D Andy
