996 Tacho Not Working

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Dallypro, Jun 14, 2025.

  1. what year and model is your bike Alex? @Dallypro
If it's the early 996 (base model) from 1999 then it used a 40240061B apparently, which was used on:- 916/748 (base models) from 1998, 748(base)/748R from 2000.
    Later 996(base) and 996S from 2000 and 2001 used a 40240121A

All SPS had different again from above, but early (1998/1999) might have been display artwork only as part number only change was "A" instead of "B".
    Later 996SPS (2000) used 40240131A.

  2. Having said that, I have a vague memory that a P8 tacho may work on a 16M.
I may be completely wrong though!

Surely there's more 16M tachos out there - can't someone lend one to the Op?

  3. No, you were right. A P8 tacho doesn't work with a 16M ECU. I think one is triggered on a positive pulse and the other on a negative pulse.
