996 Tacho Not Working

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Dallypro, Jun 14, 2025.

  1. what year and model is your bike Alex? @Dallypro
If it's the early 996 (base model) from 1999 then it used a 40240061B apparently, which was used on:- 916/748 (base models) from 1998, 748(base)/748R from 2000.
    Later 996(base) and 996S from 2000 and 2001 used a 40240121A

All SPS had different again from above, but early (1998/1999) might have been display artwork only as part number only change was "A" instead of "B".
    Later 996SPS (2000) used 40240131A.

  2. Having said that, I have a vague memory that a P8 tacho may work on a 16M.
I may be completely wrong though!

Surely there's more 16M tachos out there - can't someone lend one to the Op?

  3. No, you were right. A P8 tacho doesn't work with a 16M ECU. I think one is triggered on a positive pulse and the other on a negative pulse.

  4. Jeeezus! 461 euro for a rev counter? Ivor, sorry to teach people to suck eggs but are you sure the earths are all good? Loose earth on my my 748 made the rev counter dance like the dancing queen on friday night.

  5. Buy the way most electronics are switched on the neutral side, poor earth?

  6. Hi all

Apologies, I've only just seen all the chat. Appreciate the input......it's an absolute minefield

Anyway, I've bought a tacho which according to the seller (A Ducati parts person) is 100% compatible with my bike (2000 996 BP with a 16M ECU), despite it being off an earlier 916.

I've plugged it in and nothing. Not even a flicker from the needle......and the oil pressure light isn't working on this one either (although does light up when I earth the connection......exactly the same as my original tacho)

I'm now confident the issue is on the bike not the tacho.......but where do I start looking?
    - I have continuity on green/grey from ECU to back of tacho
    - I have a variable signal at the tacho (I'm assuming this is the correct variable signal at the moment)
    - I've got 13.7v across the battery when I lift the revs, so I'm assuming the RR is working correctly
    - The battery is fully charged and was brand new from Luigi Moto in April.

What earth connections can I check? Any other suggestions? Always happy to start with the obvious stuff first.

  7. Earth

  8. I agree....but where?!?! Is there any way of lashing a new earth in to test its that?

Also: Many thanks to you personally with regards to this situation. Really appreciate the work done to try and sort some swapping/changing. Made a snap decision to just buy one while a matching one was available, on the thought that if its not that I can always resell it. Pricey experiment but at least its done!

  9. You should have continuity from the tacho terminal with the black wire back to battery -ve. The instrument lights and coolant temperature gauge all use the same earth as the tach. If the instrument light and temp gauge are all working, you have power to the taco and continuity of the green/grey wire back to pin 24 of the ECU then the fault appears to lie with the ECU. I have heard of the tacho connector suffering from a dry joint inside the tacho but that is unlikely to be the case with both tachos.

  10. I have an oscilloscope, so could possibly help. Are you anywhere near Bristol?

  11. Sorry to here of your woes, see if you can find a decent wiring diagram for that bike and model year.

  12. That is getting really technical, ohm/voltmeter good start.

  13. Try running a wire from the tacho earth back to the battery -ve

  14. Ive just popped out and checked, and there is continuity from the black wire to the battery negative terminal, so I assume that means we can rule out the Earth as a problem?!?!

Although - it does make me question why the oil pressure light isnt coming on on either tacho, but does come on if I earth the connection between the Blue and Yellow wires?!? Faulty oil pressure switch as well?

  15. "Anyway, I've bought a tacho which according to the seller (A Ducati parts person) is 100% compatible with my bike (2000 996 BP with a 16M ECU), despite it being off an earlier 916."

If this is an honourable Ducati person chap then obviously keep the receipt as ought to be refundable if not correct.

Further to this - i don't know the cut-off VIN (someone will) but according to the spares microfische going by year (part of which i listed in an earlier post) that tacho isn't necessarily suitable... it does need someone in the "absolute know" to add more.

  16. So I've been out having a poke about. This is what I have found:

    - There is continuity between black wire on tacho connector and battery -ve
    - With ignition on and engine not running I have 10.7V between red and black on tacho connector (is this normal?)
    - With engine running at idle I have 12.8V between red and black on Tacho connector (is this normal?)
    - I have lashed a direct earth in and it made no difference
    - I still dont have an oil pressure light, but the light defo works
    - All of the above has been tested on both Tachos.

Perfectly agree that there is potential for the Tacho to be the wrong one. The seller was "DaCorsa Moto" who appear to have a fair knowledge. I can not see part numbers on either Tacho, so im not sure how i can compare them. The 2 i have look identical bar a minor difference on the face. Both are "Ducati Sport"

I dont have an oscilloscope (To the chap who mentioned Bristol - I grew up nearby but now live near Carmarthen)

Just to refer back to the start, Luigi Moto had a go at sorting this when i sent the bike in for a big service, but due to time etc they didn't get far. They did some swaps including EPROMS etc, but at no point did the Tacho work (although the oil pressure light did, which has now given up as well)

  17. Sounds like a faulty connection to ECU or ECU to earth. I admit I am not familiar with your model bike.

  18. Have you checked voltage across the battery when engine running?

  19. I have. It was 13.7V
