Featured 1098 My New 1098s

  1. A dream finally come true!

After a couple of years of coveting a 848/1098/1198, I've finally bitten the bullet and traded my Monster 821 for this lovely 1098S with just 9900 miles on it.

I popped into Ducati Stoke a few weeks back to have a chat with Simon who'd sold me my previous two bikes and said I was on the lookout for an 848. Asking if I'd ever thought about a 1098, I told him I thought it might be a bit too much for me but he reassured me I'd be okay for it. He didn't have any in stock, but he had a look on Autotrader and spotted this one - he knew the dealer who had it and said they were good guys so I got in touch with Andy at Sheldon Motorcycles to discuss the trade. I couldn't get down there due to work, but my mate went down and gave it a thorough looking over and gave it a thumbs up so I thought it was time to finally do it! Thanks to Simon for his help, and also to Andy at Sheldon who was great to deal with and arranged delivery and collection of my Monster.

Looks like it started life in Glasgow, was on the road for about 5 years, then seems to have been off the road between 2014 and 2022 before being run again. Waiting for the V5 to come through before I can confirm how many previous owners it's had, but I'm guessing two. Reg ends in BXJ, wondered if any previous owners are on here or if anyone has come across the bike?

I've been out for one ride so far, I'm not a sportsbike rider so it was quite a different experience to what I'm used to but I enjoyed it. I'll be doing all my own maintenence on it (I've kept my Multistrada alive for two years including a desmo service), and I'm looking forward to all aspects of ownership - riding and spannering.

I had a thread on here while I was doing my research into owning one of these bikes, lots of very useful info, but especially thanks to @bigjimmyb who gave me a lot of info about his 1098S

Here's a few photos, and I also did a video of my first ride. I'll try to video all the work I do, although I will just say I'm a very amateur tinkerer and any videos I do should be regarded a vlog, not 'How to'!

I doubt I'll get on the road much until spring, so having some garage time doing preventative work and a few mods.

    Cheers
    MM

  2. Yes!

    Nice work fella!

And quite unbelievably mine came from Andy at Sheldon too in 2020!

Looking forward to hearing about your new ride and experience of riding it. They are brutal but controllable. I’m in love with mine.

    Enjoy!!!

  4. I don’t know if you did but you don’t have to hold the start button. One push gets the starter motor going.

You can adjust the span on the clutch otherwise that far out will end up hurting!

  5. An Oberon slave cylinder will help as well as lever adjustment.

    You can get mirror extenders.

And Termis (esp without DB killers) will rattle your neighbours windows ! If you get them get the map done.

Just ask away mate and I’ll do my best to help you enjoy it until it becomes more familiar.

It’s almost 5 years to the day since I got mine.

  6. Bonkers, what are the chances?!

Yes I have since found out I don't need to hold in the starter. My next video will be me changing the charging lead so that I can charge the battery - I couldn't get it going on Sunday when I wanted to go out for a ride ad instead spent a nevertheless enjoyable afternoon taking off the fairings and doing a few jobs. Spoiler alert: I got it going again.

Come the spring I'll meet you halfway for a coffee if you're up for it!

  7. Maybe go for exact start cables for the starter. They are beefier and do the job much better. An optimiser is a must and f it stand for more than a few days really. I leave mine overnight every other night.

  8. Yes, I'm going to be getting the exact start cables, I put them on my Multistrada earlier this year. Will also be going for the reg/reg/replacement and relocation. Another very helpful chap has commented on my video about replacing the radiator so I'm going to look into that too. I've got plans for the Termis (full system?), and a few other things too but I want to do all the preventative stuff to it first.

  9. Full system for sure!

I’d only replace the rad if it’s showing its age. Mine pinholed last year so the original lasted 17 years. Assuming it was original of course!
