Fairing Repairs ( St )

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Rushjob, Nov 16, 2025.

  1. Hi all, does anyone have any idea as to the type of plastic used in the fairings for bikes built in the early 2000's - my ST3 specifically. Got a little bit of a repair to undertake, so any comments on what to use ( or not to use! ) would be appreciated.

  2. I've done some small repairs on Ducati fairings from that era with fibreglass. Strengthening areas around cracks mainly but also replacing broken off/missing parts. Works really well for me. Rough it up, clean it and laminate away. I use West system resin for larger patches but have also successfully used 2 part epoxy glue as a resin for the glass mat for small areas. The repairs are a few years old now and have held up well.

  4. Think it might be ABS
I've got a bunch of 916 panels that need work so have picked up a plastic welding kit to have a go. My local panel shop advised heated staples and/or epoxy with carbon fibre/glass mat for the back and for the outer face, v out the crack then weld/plastic filler/abs slurry with acetone to fill.

  5. All the ones I’ve repaired have been abs. Plastic welding works well with some repair pins to reinforce it.

  6. Any links to what you mean by repair pins ?

  7. The comment above re heated staples reminded me that I had bought a plastic welding kit from Temu or somewhere like that several years ago! Dug it out and using numerous wiggly metal clips across the cracks, and some very fine stainless mesh ( used for mosquito screens on bathroom extractor fans ) melted in to the back with a flat soldering iron has returned the strength to the panel just nicely. Grooved out the cracks on the face of the fairing and filled with molten cable tie and sanded back, and I'm just waiting for some hi build primer and some paint cans to land courtesy of Amazon. Thanks for the hints, it was just what my crap memory needed to jolt it into action. :):upyeah:

  8. And don't forget when painting:

The temp should be above 20C
If you think the parts are clean enough, wash them again & then use paint prep solution

    Goodluck!

  9. Yep, luckily temperature isn’t too much of a worry here in Southern Spain once the sun has hit the workshop roof
