For some reason, a section of my clutch side engine case has had a reaction and the paint has come away and can see the bare aluminium. Does anyone have the correct paint code for the spray? Also am I best to apply a etch primer first? Any tips on the correct method to restore this case to a close original finish? Roadkill
Google rs bike paint, they have it. Touch up, aerosol or in a tin. They also sell the etch primer and lacquer to go with it.
I’ve got a bit of frame, wheels & engine painting going on for a rebuild. Will try and find out the products.
It has been said time and again that the reason for the disgraceful longevity of Ducati’s engine paints for the last 30+ years is due to their refusal to use etch primers in their painting process. Whether that is true or not, how is it that other manufacturers seem to produce better, long lasting finishes on much less expensive models?
I’ve used the Engine Enamel on various occasions in the past, it’s good, provided you run the engine afterwards and cure it properly, or bake the component in the oven but be aware the OH will know as the oven will stink for days and taint other foods cooked in there . Once cured properly it is oil and petrol proof. However, depending how precise you want to be it’s nowhere near the shade Ducati used in that period, it’s much lighter. Although the lacquer is petrol/oil proof I don’t believe it’s heat resistant so will become tacky if used on engine components as they heat up.
RS Motorcycle Paint link, https://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-gb/colours.php. When I repainted the cases on a Multistrada, I used Hammerite. Andy
If it help i have just sprayed mine with TK line paints, Yanmar Grey and this is how it looks now Stu
The Simoniz paints are not a good match, they are too bright and don't really have the metallic fleck that the OEM Ducati has.
I can also vouch for the YT Yanmar Grey paint, I re-painted both my engine covers using it, using an etch primer, then the YT paint and finished with several coats of matt lacquer (Pro XL). I was trying to match the colour of the early 916 engines, which to my eye has a slight green grey appearance, it’s not exact but it’s very close - although in my case, I was trying to match 30+ year old paint on a 1994 Strada.
Just done mine with Etch Primer, followed by spray from https://www.rsbikepaint.com//en-gb/...modelid=1360&prodyear=1997&colourscheme=49085 and then a Satin Lacquer spray.
I removed the paint and then etch primer and 3-4 coats of TK Yanmar Grey and thats it, i didnt lacquer it as the paint is made for Marine engines didnt think it would be needed and its been fine since.
I used an industrial product per the link below - anything aimed at DIY that you can buy ‘over the counter’ is all but useless these days. https://mppaints.co.uk/shop/ols/products/heavy-duty-industrial-strength-synstryp-1-litre
