Phone Holder Choice...

  1. Happy New Year to one and all.

    So, cunning plan.

I have alluded to it on another thread but this is the latest idea.

I plan to use some old mobiles as dashcams on my various vehicles. It's simple enough, download the APP, get a mount and off you go.

However, it is proving a wee bit more tricky on the Multi Rally.

So I am looking for ideas, advice or recommendations as to the best product and mounting methods to stick my old G8 Motorola on the front of the bike.

It can be a semi-permanent solution, under the deflector, strapped to a mirror stalk etc

So any ideas, advice or previous experience as to method and mounting choice would be gratefully received.

    Cheers in advance Komrads.

  2. Check that the 'phone has a large capacity and that the resolution & frame rate are low. For example, an hour of recording at 1080p at 30fps might use 4-8 GB, while 4K at 60fps could exceed 20 GB.

  3. Just jumping in on this thread as I have a 'similar' scenario, although it's an action camera as opposed to a mobile phone.

Received a rather nice gift of an insta 360 x5 kit and am now searching for a suitable handlebar mount to put on my 2019 MS PP. I've seen the official Insta 360 handlebar mount but from what I can see it doesn't offer as larger range of movement vs. some of the other clamps that use 'ball' attachments/ram style arms.

Just wondering if any forum member has found an ideal clamp?

  4. Don’t go cheap. Quality anti-vibration mount is essential. Vibration is a camera killer. May not apply but particularly on iPhones.

  5. Agree with Fairy - QuadLock seem to get favourable reviews?

  6. Been using a Quadlock with their case and anti vibration mount for a couple of years now and not had any issues with phone damage or losing said phone.

  7. For dashcam usage you need a reasonably high resolution camera if you're going to capture number plates at a distance. The G8 seems to be OK: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps. If the G8 isn't valuable to you, I recommend just strapping it on temporarily (strong gaffer tape, etc) before spending dosh on things like a Quad Lock mount - which are very good by the way if you're also considering the phone as a satnav. The temporary position doesn't matter much, and you'll get a good idea whether it's going to work or not.

    > Quality anti-vibration mount is essential
The Motorola G8 has Electronic Video Stabilization, not optical image stabilisation, so it doesn't need an anti-vibration mount.
