Experience Selling Bikes And Advice

  1. A couple of years ago I was in the same situation as Stuiebikes father.I had two old British bikes plus a nice Ducati.I sold one old Brit via ebay and one via Car and Classic.Regretabbly both sites do attract, ebay more so,complete wasters and one has to reconcile the fact that you will get at least one tyre kicker and wanabee Arthur Daly pulling your lovely bike to pieces ending with a pathetic offer to help you out.Just treat them as imbeciles, take no notice, and mentally decide you wouldn't sell them bike at any price.
There are decent buyers out there, but they are thin on the ground and almost non existent for old Brit bikes, that market has mostly fallen through the floor.
Whatever you think of your prized bike be prepared to accept that all your hard work and expense will not be rewarded with a magnificent sale price.
My feeling at the time was to save problems for my family later and get rid of the bikes.Less to worry about going forward.
It's a hard market out there for sure-good luck to your dad with his bike disposals.

  2. It's a 998S show front forks like yours. It was a BP from the factory but it also has a single seat included.

  6. I have never really enjoyed the process of selling bikes and cars.I was very good at buying though.
As I say, just try and ignore the wasters, someone decent will come along, but accept in todays market it is mainly a buyers market.

  7. I would not know much about velocette and I don't know much about the CB 750 except that it is the bike of the Joe Bar Team (original) - a funny French cartoon which I used to sell in the UK.

Re the 998s - it is quite a special bike for its engine.
The 998s was essentially the 996R engine with sandcast cases and deep sump. This is what makes them valuable.
The rest is essentially 998 chassis with ohlins shock. Better if you have an Ally rear subframe and single seat.
The FE or the Bostrom sell for more because they were essentially variants of 996R with Ohlins up front and more or less carbon and a production number / limited series.

You should take your time to sell the bike because there is no money in the market right now, especially in the UK. The prices have sustained much better in continental europe. And post Christmas, everybody is even more skint and freezing outside, you don't sell that easily, but winter also sees a lot less competition.
So, selling a bike in winter is not a bad move, and some people (like me) like to tinker to get it ready for the season.

  8. Thanks
Thanks that is useful. Dad's in no real rush to sell them so that's good. It's difficult to know the correct price to put them up. Hopefully a realistic one where although we have to wait for the right buyer it's priced at a point where someone will say yes that's the bike I'm looking for.
