  1. i've just been very naughty, and said something that most people wouldn't dream of saying out loud to somebody being anti-social - and my nose hasn't been broken!

  5. yes I do, I'm tempted to add it here but there will be lots of negatives. I talked to him a few minutes later despite him clocking me with a frosty look, and I think he appreciated what I had said.

  6. I'm reminded of the scene in Jaws where Richard Dreyfus says the proportions are actually quite accurate.

  7. I've ordered a new leather jacket on eBay:
    s-l1200(5).jpg s-l1200(6).jpg
I uploaded both shots to decide which looked better - but I'll leave them both up, as illustrating the point:

Those are from different vendors; but look closely and you'll see they're the same picture. They both have the identical description, too (which, among others, makes the point that it's thick cowhide, well made, well stitched, decent materials and so on).

From one of them it's £280 and from the other it's £128.

There are half a dozen or so different vendors selling it (and other leather wear - I was originally looking at reproduction WWII Kriegsmarine leather coats); approx. divided half and half between selling for £280 and £128. All have the same pictures as per the two above; and the same description.

I routinely search there for UK based vendors - not for patriotic or racist reasons, but because I don't want to wait weeks while a product sails from China. This fails when they're UK based but then proceed themselves to order from overseas. In the case of these coats and jackets, though, each vendor (assuming they're not all the same one using multiple identities) claims to manufacture such leather goods themselves, in the UK. Though it's hard to see how they could make quality leather jackets at such - certainly the lower - cost; but they don't explicitly state that they make those products.

And then comes the outlier: the one vendor (with pictures of the identical jacket) with a different price - £150; a different location, on looking closer - Australia - and a different approach to their rendition of the otherwise identical information: that the jacket is made in Pakistan.

Well, if it's well made, in Pakistan, it could feasibly be a decent motorcycle jacket for £128 - though for now I'm supposing I should continue using the one I bought that was made here and protected me nicely when I dropped the 999, but this green leather 'Brando-style' jacket (ie like I'd get, in black, from Lewis Leathers were they not as much an overpriced fashion brand as Doc Martens are these days) will be perfectly acceptable as a fashion product.

Incidentally it's not only available in green. Also black, red, blue, and presumably brown. The Kriegsmarine coats (£310) are also available in those colours, but mainly black, brown or grey, and I didn't see that one in green.

Most of the UK based companies have British names, but one is called Ace-Italia.

If it's any good I probably will buy the German Navy coat. I haven't decided between the black and the grey. I feel like when I favour the black it's because I want to scare the shit out of people before taking out a PPK and shooting them. But I don't have a PPK.

  8. Part of the point I'm labouring (and, oh yes, all the UK based ones say delivery in 2 - 3 days) is that i) it would be so easy to decide you like it, from a £280 ad, and click 'buy now' without looking and ever finding out that you could have it for £128, and ii) I have more or less always wondered if most of these different companies are actually the same company, using various psychological strategies. Yes, lots of people will buy the more expensive version because they don't think to search; but maybe the more companies selling it, the more popular it looks? Many people think the more expensive something is, the better it is: so maybe selling at two such different prices you get, as it were, both markets, the naive and the canny?

Because it seems hard to reconcile the two so specific prices, with multiple companies selling at one or the other.

Yesterday. Joined the second half of a bi-weekly TRF ride out as meeting at 1115am a mile from my house is much more civilised than having to meet at 930am 5 miles away. The lanes were very slippery and my rear tyre is fucked due to having to ride 10 road miles on it while completely flat the other week, but managed to stay upright and the weather was more like early spring than midwinter. Although you wouldn’t believe it from the look on my face, it was a really good day.
