D30 Ghost Armour

  1. The point of D3O is it stiffens on impact: It's not meant to stop an egg from cracking in such a circumstance, it's designed to spread an impact load over a larger area of the body. What a crap vid that totally does not get the point, eggstremely useless.

  3. Custard powder with just a small amount of water is a great eggsample of thixotropic action, which is what D3O exhibits. Or Mānuka honey if you're posh. Very resistant to rapid change.

    A tea towel isn't.

  4. D3O Ghost isn’t viscoelastic, whereas “regular” D3O is non-Newtonian. Hence, Ghost armour doesn’t harden with impact.

Indeed, so perhaps the Ghost armour performed poorly because it didn’t stiffen with impact.

I imagine “regular” D3O (i.e. the non-Newtonian stuff that hardens with impact) is significantly better than Ghost.

  5. Non-Newtonian is related to fluids. Ghost isn't a fluid, so my comparion with custard powder with water was a bad one. Fair cop! :upyeah: D3O is viscoelastic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscoelasticity. When the egg hits the Ghost pad, the pad is going to temporarily harden - harder than an egg. The tea towel doesn't harden on impact - it cushions the blow.

There doesn't seem to be any difference in material between the different D3O protective items, just a different way of creating them: 'normal'/original is moulded, so you'll have a moulded cupped shoulder pad, etc, and Ghost is 'printed' onto a backing fabric with gaps in the printed D3O pattern to let the item flex and fit the body.

There are two variants of Ghost: Ghost Level 1 is half the thickness of Ghost Level 2 - 6.5mm thick versus 11mm*.
And the protection from both variants is respectively EN 1621-1:2012 (Level 1) and LEN 1621-1:2012 (Level 2).
EN 1621-1:2012 (Level 2) offers up to twice the protection of Level 1.

In other words twice the thickness of D3O material = twice the protection.

As ever, it's a trade-off of protection (Level 1/2, A/AA/AAA, etc) versus comfort (bulk, weight, flexibility, cooling).
And never carry eggs in your inside pocket.
