That sounds like blackthorn, even after the thorn is removed the poison gets left behind. They're spiteful bloody shrubs but make great stockproof hedges.
Yes it was blackthorn. Very rare I react to it - or hawthorn. I assumed I was more or less immune as I get stabbed by it all the time. Usually it's just irritating until the thorn is removed. This one was weird. Puncture wound burns like severe nettle rash and the knee joint is painful and seized. Actually they're not toxic but they can host a lot of bacteria. Place I'm working is a filthy dump so that may account for it. They gave me a tetanus and a course of antibiotics.
horrible stuff, I've been unlucky over the years and overall I would prefer a couple of wasp stings as pain and irritation can remain for weeks can't it? Good news that it didn't break off and stay in your knee.
I see that Guardian journalists are still crowbarring references to wild swimming into articles at every available opportunity

but thinking about it just a lil more there. if all goes to plan, i will have the only workshop in Oban that's not on a flood plain (seriously) and ferk me, when it does rain, it's not really rain. it's a deluge. so fecking man up fin. anyhoo. an old mate from the forestry popped in the other day. i haven't seen him in a while. Dynamite Dave. formally known as Chopper dave who has moved up the ranks to managing forestry Quarrying. he was chatting about the weather (as one does) they monitor the rainfall quite closely. he said the amount of rain Argyll gets in any one year hasn't really changed. it's just goes from dry season to monsoon season these day, rather than the constant drizzle the west was renowned for. weeks of scortchio to days of absolute bonkers pishing it down.
Currently there's 90 ninety flood warnings, across England but only three in Scotland. Rain is expected throughout Wednesday & Thursday. Friday brings snow and ice. There are yellow Met Office snow and ice warnings issued for much of Scotland and northern England from 16:00 GMT Thursday to 12:00 Friday. Rain will turn to snow initially over high ground but it could fall at lower levels for a time. Above 300 metres may see 10 cm settling. The rain and snow is expected to clear Saturday as skies clear, leading to ice covered roads. The UK's Health Security Agency has also issued yellow alerts for the colder weather across northern England and the Midlands from 06:00 GMT Friday to 08:00 Monday. Next week the wettest weather will return to west Scotland. The rain won't be as bad in east Scotland. In the southwest of England, it won't rain every single day, there will be drier and sunnier days between our weather systems.
It was unbelievably lovely today in Bristol. Actual warm sun and blue sky for a couple of hours. I almost took a bike out!
