it seems my stator is buggered 899 pani, other than paying almost £600 from the dealer does anyone know a company that supplies them in the uk (preferably). or a company that rewinds them. thanks
Westcountry Windings also offer motorcycle rewinding services. Don't list prices but it's got to be cheaper than £600. Why is it buggered though..? If it's an 899 Pani it can't be that old. Westcountry Windings - Services
their web page is just blank. i had a ducati tech round last night and its not producing more than 1.8v ac on any phase. he was shocked as he said they never fail. but i noticed the reg/rec has been changed for a mofsett unit. could the old part have caused damage when it failed?
There used to be an outfit in Dorking who would be capable of fixing this, but would be costly - might turn up secondhand? Out of interest, was this Regulator and/or loom overheating issues that caused this?
Does the link not work? it's coming up for me. On the reg/rec front, I think you definitely have to figure out why the stator failed in the first place before splashing out on replacement/repair.
I recently had the alternator on my Moto Guzzi rewound by Westcountry windings, very knowledgeable, knew exactly what they were doing as they had done plenty before. Did a great job, cost around £120 and turned round in about a week. Their website isn't up to much, I called them and I gather they're a bit old school but, no issues with the service and quality of work.
Good to know. Got em book marked now as my 1098 may require their services. A bargain against the cost of replacement. Maybe the way to go if @jase can establish why his stator cooked itself in the first place.
Definitely cheaper than a new one. As an aside, I had to chuckle at the name 'West Country', seeing as they're about as far east as you can go without getting your feet wet.
Yes. A faulty reg/rec can cause alternator burnout. But I'd have thought the battery would have been getting cooked as well. AI search results say using a mosfet with a lead acid battery is "not recommended" but I'm absolutely no expert on electrics so I wouldn't be able to advise with any confidence. Does the 899 run l/a or lithium? Maybe @nelly can help?
I did wonder why they called themselves "Westcountry" Windings as they're actually in Norfolk. Still a long way from Tyneside unless you're just sending the stator in the post.
I think that's the area you need to investigate before you start on the stator. Was the 899 Pani of your year a lead acid from the factory and the mosfet an previous owner mod to run lithium? If it was and you've refitted with l/a that could be your problem.
