Sp5 On Ebay ?

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by Mr Tea, Mar 9, 2026.

  1. Sadly, no longer in the market for an SP5, but the thing that does not add up for me, literally and figuratively, is the rebuild.
Ok, it was a while ago, and overlooking the “what happened to the crankcases to the point they needed replacing?” “Are the new ones numbered? “ type questions, even in 2013 NEW SP crankcases would have been multiple thousand pounds (we know Ducati knows how to charge for stuff - that’s not a new thing!), all new bearings ans seals, another thousand, full dismantle and rebuild by someone who knew what they were doing another thousand at least, and all of this work was done for around a thousand? I could be wrong, but it just makes me go “Hmmm”.

  2. @Jon Wright
Something about the sidestand being in the down position that caused the damage when i spoke with the owner a few years ago.!

  3. I guess a deployed side stand related crash could be the cause of important crankcase damage…

  4. I was the highest bidder. That was as high as i was prepared to go with the limited info i had ( and yes still the same story about the case damage so thats good )
I just want to run the chassis number past someone who can confirm that that is an SP5 then i'll pick it up this weekend.

Its not perfect but for a bike that will be used every now and hen on a classic TD then its fine for me.

  5. I earlier on, stuck my neck out and said a Strada* with 11K on it was worth 9. :expressionless::thinkingface:
Not much to base that on, because not much is selling but i know of a Ducati that sold recently for more, that i would definitely swap with this*
Market difficult to read at the moment.

  6. So you got it? I thought the reserve hadn't been met?
I'd have been tempted at that price. :upyeah:

  7. No , well yes, then no
So we spoke after about how close and we agreed a price that subject to me popping down i would pay this weekend.
But since then the second highest bidder has contacted him and said he will now pay £500 on top of my agreed price, basically the reserve.
The seller has come back and whats my thoughts to which is said " fine. It thats the case then let him have it but why didnt he outbid me in the auction ??"
I said my price is as we said and i would pay that on inspection this weekend . If not then so be it and I move on.

  12. Contact the seller in a week or so. 851/stradas advertised for 8/9K. See what happens and good luck.

  13. I'd be out at that point I'm afraid, it seems he's trying to extort you?

  14. Possibly yes, maybe the second placed bloke has had a change of heart and now wants it.
    Who knows .
But im sitting tight, if he comes back then so be it.
IM sure people want to know but the agreed price was £12,000 after he dropped his reserve from £13,000

  15. If it helps he quoted my fifteen thousands pounds a few years ago, good luck and you can ask Pete at Protwins for a HPI check.

  16. That tells a lot about originality vs value.

It would be very interesting to know how much Tom @RTD agreed to pay for his recently acquired SP5, which is very original, if I am not mistaken.

It seems to me that the less popular a classic vehicle was, the more originality matters to value down the line, as only collectors are interested in.

As an exemple, a fully original Darmah SSD or Weber carbed 900ss (not very popular models when Ducati tried to sell them…) fetch probably double the value over heavily modified ones. Even with period correct mods « that everyone was doing back in the day ».

851/888 are not so popular these days (as opposed to when they came out in the late 80’s early 90’s) and seem affected by the same phenomenon, except maybe regarding period correct racing mods, which may have been made popular and acceptable by the 916 series era.

  17. Fwiw, I believe the reserve when the above bike was being sold by C&C in about June 2025, first by auction and subsequently by post-auction offer, was in the region of £17k, but negotiation on viewing appeared possible. Obviously, time and circumstances have affected what in these troubled times, would be a realistic selling price.
While I was looking for an SP5, I considered this bike but did not view it, although it looked to be presentable from the images provided in the sales information. Additionally, I eventually managed to speak to the long term owner who seemed genuine, but was anxious to sell and was including a number of spares and related items.
Regarding the history of the bike as declared, Pro Twins may be able to help, as already suggested, and Ducati Support -[email protected] - might be able to assist with bike verification, but only once evidence of ownership is provided.
On this point, DMH, has recently told me that they are currently transferring bike historical records into digital format, and this has led to problems and delay in verifying bike details, which in some cases may no longer be available. However, the outcome will most likely need to be determined on a bike case by case basis.
In the instance of the SP5 I recently acquired, it is highly original, as some on the forum may have seen, down to the flimsy factory fitted handle bar grips, but has had little use for over 10 years and required sympathetic recommissioning, which was done prior to purchase. In the interest of agreed confidentiality, the asking price was around £20k, which in my opinion was acceptable for what it represents.
However, I recognise that the value of a bike is affected by age, condition, originality, history, time and sales format, so each example will be unique to its circumstances, and in my opinion the decision to be made is whether it is what is desired and the amount to be invested to achieve that. Therefore, what is paid for a given example may not be representative, and is only a single contribution to the range of values which is constantly changing.
I apologise in advance if this is a little long winded!
    However, I hope this helps.
    Good luck.
    Tom.

  18. No apologies needed Tom

I think @Guillaume69 is also spot on regarding availability and originality. If the bike wasnt overly popular in the first instance then there is a fair chance the new owners will be even more picky .
I owned a track only OW01with a huge amount of very expensive track parts and come selling time 2 years ago when the secondhand market was still buoyant it received very few interested parties and ended up going for almost half what was being asked, not sold for though, of original bikes.

RC30's are still the biggest " i want " classics as i see it soon followed by the RD350 but even they have dropped in price with the £30k RC30 now £25 and not selling. One was a auction last week and its reserve was £19,999 and yes it had a few scuffs on but was all there i think but no sale.

My 1098R hasnt been ridden for years and what was a so called £20k bike i would accept £13k now as i just dont use it. But it'll sit and some point the market will pick up.
    Its like houses.Ups and downs.

  19. As a not entirely disinterested party, I'm half toying with a v4s panigale as a bit of a toy.
Any idea what these are actually going for now, and is it worth holding on for a while if prices are dropping?
Ideally I'd like one with the gills but not the wings tbh, but if I want the gills I think I have to have the wings.
