1098 Not Starting When Engine Is Hot

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by RAY WYNN, Mar 10, 2026.

  1. it cannot twist it can only move in and out by about 10mm as i said on post 51.

  2. did some tests today after fitting a new fuel filter and i need a new starter motor. plus i will fit a new starter contactor.

  3. casing off and might have found the starting problem. positive block split in half and body inside magnet compartment well worn. down to about 0.5mm.

  4. need a tip to part the sprag clutch from the housing/magnet. once i have done this i can compare two used sprag clutches i have for ware and tare. photo of broken positive block and worn starter body IMG_20260404_150439.jpg

  5. The copper coloured (copper) thing is the commutator (com), the black things are brushes, they should be spring loaded against the com, it looks like bad contact was being made between brushes and com, not possible to see from picture but, worn brushes can be replaced
What (in my experience with motors) usually happens is either the brushes get stuck in the holder, or get worn to the point that not enough pressure is being produced to make good contact with the com
I have no idea of the cost of a replacement starter, however it may be worth getting replacement brushes

  9. if its broken i will replace it

  10. Ffs because stupidly I thought that anyone with basic mechanical skills would rather pay £10.00 for brushes rather than (guessing) £150 for a starter

  13. just found the OEM sprag clutch from about 10-15k ,so will be interested to see if there is any ware difference to the recent one that has done another 20k. again, any tips on parting the sprag clutch from its mounting. got wd40 overnight in it but do not want to get hammers involved

  14. Confused in Ireland here. You’re asking about how to separate the sprag clutch from its magnetic mounting yet the sprag or starter clutch isn’t in a magnetic mounting, it’s behind the flywheel and it’s not held in place by magnets and all your recent photos and posts are about a starter motor.
