A few days break at The Oxforshire golf club last year was the most expensive beer I had ever had at £9.90 for a pint of Guinness. Well, I have to tell you that this was superbly surpassed with a pint of lager in Laon France at 13.00 Euros for pint. Absolutely ridiculous but that seems to be the way of the world today. Can anyone beat that price for a pint anywhere else in the world?
It was £9.25 a pint at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle today, and £5 for a small bottle of Coca Cola. A small portion of cheesy chips was £12.50!
Literally anywhere on the strip in Vegas is $15 on a weekend - clubs are pushing $30 but as I am pushing 50 they’re not for me anyway! I can give a specific example of paying $18 for pint of some hipster stout I can’t remember the name of in Bellagio. I paid $25 for a bottle of water from my mini-bar once. …and yes I know all the ways you can drink a lot cheaper very easily but that wasn’t the question.
For me it wasn't just the headline price. What I found in Baden Baden was that the town survives on the wealthy retired Germans and the wealthy Russian immigrants. We spent as much eating out in 6 nights as the entire trip cost us in fuel and hotels. A Salad is 18 Euros; A Beefburger is 26 Euros; an Ice cream sundae is 15 euros; a Rump steak is 36 euros. Honestly guys, the prices are not only eye watering but insane and I for one would not want to pay that every day of the week. A weeks holiday is one thing but there is clearly some serious money around that is enabling these establishments to exist. A little birdie told me it was mostly Russian dirty money but I am happy to be convinced otherwise.
Thats quite shocking but everyone keeps telling me that that's what it is these days so stop moaning!
Every main course at my local Indian restaurant ( by local I mean it's in my sleepy 350 house village ) is 28 quid. A beer is £7 and I don't think that's extraordinary now. It's pretty much the price wherever you go for a decent meal. So 30 something euro for a steak in beauty spot like Baden Baden doesn't sound so bad.
I concur but how does one reconcile such costs into daily life? I guess all of us on this forum are from different walks of life and circumstances but surely there comes a point at which something is unacceptable? it get's very annoying when people just keep telling you that "such is life" and offer no other opinion.
You suggest that 30 something euro is reasonable but add to that the 18 euro salad, the 10 euro starter; the 15 euro sweet; the 35 euro bottle of wine or the 10 euro glass of beer and with a tip you are ending up at circa 200euros for you and the missus to have a reasonable meal out. Believe me, I looked at some menus where 150 euros a head would be cheap for lunch, let alone dinner.
The Newcastle owners aren't made of money you know. They've got to balance the books somehow. It's not like you can dig it out of the ground or anything.
£1:58, is that from the olden days before you went EV. £1:92 per litre of Diesel and £2:14 for Vpower.
Mine's a hybrid. It primarily works as an EV but when the charge drops to around 25% the ICE kicks in to charge the EV motor (which continues to drive the wheels) and maintains the EV drive motor at 25-30% and so on and so forth.
Going back to beer, it was always generally understood that beer in Norway, Sweden and Iceland was twice UK prices. The UK in our current parlous economic climate has pretty much caught up. Iceland is about £9 a pint, Norway £7-8 and Sweden £6-7. Our village pub over the road is a fiver a pint. £6.50 for Guinness and premium lager (and they've got weaker). Who have thought we'd reach par with Scandinavian prices. No wonder our pubs are dropping like flies.
Back in 1997 on route to NZ I found myself in the financial district of Hong Kong. Walking onto a bar i asked for a pint of lager, I was told they didn’t serve pints, that really should have been the clue. So being a smart arse is asked for two halves. 170 HKD/ £13 each! I didn’t go back.
OMG and that was 30 years ago!! Mentioning NZ, I remember in 2005 visiting the Marlborough region and being partial to the wonderful Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which was circa £4/5 a bottle in Sainsburys at the time, was shocked to find it priced at 26NZD and that's where it's made!!
That’s a bloody expensive french restaurant. That’s not the norm in France. Plat du jour is still often less than 20 euros for three courses and a glass of wine.
Yes you are right Duke and we found France generally very reasonable for food. The prices I quoted above were in Baden-Baden. At our stop over in Verdun on the way down we had the most fantastic 3 course meal including an Irish coffee and it was circa 70 euros for the two of us. Ditto on the way back in Laon with a fabulous meal for 48 euros. The 13 euro pint was at a tourist attraction hotspot in the same town. There were some anomalies though because we were told that a lot of Germans drive into France to fill up with fuel and accordingly I filled up just before going across the border and paid 2.29 euros for diesel. When we arrived at our hotel the garage next door was selling diesel at 2.09 euros.
Ive just had an email asking me to comment on my experience at the venue including the quality and prices of the F&B offering. They've been telt.
