That's a relief. I rode through a puddle last week, and haven't slept since, after reading this thread.
I am off to Czech Republic WSB on Wednesday and parking the bike up outside the Hotel for three days. Just put the original closed cover back on as it’s looking a bit wet out there.
I have my open clutch cover on all the time through rain etc, even when I wash the bike, and done now 12.5 K miles on original . So nothing to do with that !!!!!!!
Thanks for that. I'm convinced that the problems I was having had nothing to do with it getting wet - just given a piss poor reason but unfortunately im not mechanically minded - im still convinced it's the quick shifter or something in the gearbox. It's fine going up the gears under normal riding but once you have it under high load at high revs it misses or won't go into gear smoothly - 4th to 5th is suspect and 5th to 6th when your giving it the beans can sound like mechanical suicide . I've had a new clutch fitted @ 6700 miles and it's no better. Unfortunately the dealer can only test ride the bike upto the national speed limit . I'm stuck - Any ideas out there Cheers
I’d imagine you are using the quickshifter on those gears at that load, so a clutch issue seems unlikely. If you haven’t already, try using the clutch under the conditions described and the same with the shifter. That should point to where the problem is. My guess is gearbox.
Just coming back from Czech WSB on the return leg of a 2,000 mile ride and it has started slipping when I open her up I am off to WDW and will put another 3,000 miles on her, so going to have to put another set of plates.
Well - just an update on the bike Had a second opinion and convinced it might be the selector fork between 5th and 6th - so its all now sorted - went to the dealers to get it booked in and decided to part ex it against a new one - hopefully Luigi was sober when he made this one - simples
Well, my third clutch started slipping at 15,000 miles, so lasted 3,500 miles. I am off to Italy for WDW so going to attempt to change the plates myself and will try the EVR plates from Moto Rapido (and sponsor Leon Haslam at the same time ). Bought myself a clutch holding tool and need a 140lb/ft breaker bar. Will check the plates that come out and should then have a spare 2mm plate if I want to give that a go in the future. One thing I have noticed is the way I adjust the clutch lever - I don’t leave much fee play in the adjustment so going to back that off slightly.
As a few people have said, it’s pretty easy to take it apart if you buy the clutch tool. It was a bit of a state unfortunately. Blew all the dust out like I done before putting the standard cover back on, absolutely filthy inside again. Plates were under 35.5mm so the new EVR plates went it. But the basket is knackered and I think riding in the rain with an open clutch cover hasn’t helped, some pretty rusty parts in there. I cleaned it up the best I could and refitted it all. Ducati always replace the main nut, but I have re-used it as a lot of people do. I’ve kept the 2mm plate out of the old clutch and cleaned it up in case I need it - might stick it in when I get back from WDW. A quick ride round the block and it’s seems OK if a little grabby, and not as noisy.
