  4. To see it "classically" it needs to be viewed from the Swiss side and then you need to head for Zermatt. The town is blocked off to normal motorised transport though.
From the Italian side the mountain is a bit meh & boring view, but at least you can use motorised transport all the way to Cervinia which is at around 2000m which should be a fun ride anyway.
Not speaking from personal experience in riding / driving there, but I have skied there and skied between Cervinia and Zermatt, they are lift-connected and it's easy to go between the two except during bad / windy weather

  5. I've driven by car to Cervinia many times and skied over to Zermatt several times. Not for a few years mind but I wouldn't say it's a particularly exhilarating drive up to Cervinia especially if you get stuck behind a bus and, as above you can't drive into Zermatt, you have to park and get the train/bus/taxi, even horse-drawn carriage the rest of the way though I've never done it as I've only arrived in Zermatt by skis from Cervinia.

As above the classic view of the Matterhorn is to be seen from the Swiss side, in Cervinia you see the back side of it (Monte Cervino).

You also get a spectacular view of it and indeed all of the alps from the top of the Klein Matterhorn, which is the highest viewing platform in the Alps at around 3,900m (cable car, lift, steps to the top) but be aware the weather can change from glorious to a raging blizzard in an instant.

One thing about skiing down to Zermatt when staying in Cervinia is that it's not unknown for the weather to change suddenly and the cable car/ski-lifts then be closed due to high wind, leaving you stranded in Zermatt which although it's not far from Cervinia, it's one hell of a taxi trip to get back if you can't stay there overnight.

It looks to be beautiful in the summer, though I've only been in the winter when you really wouldn't want to be riding your bike up there as it can get really cold - I was there over Christmas & New Year many years ago, most of the lifts were closed due to the high wind and extreme cold, the temperature for Plateau Rosa was showing -38c one day.

  6. Indeed! Almost got stuck last time there, was a very bumpy gondola ride & they shut it down right as we got off and then we managed to blag one of the last T-bar runs over the top before they shut that down too - it was horrendous wind on that last tow over!!

  7. It would be interesting to see how you get on - and see if you think it is doable, or worth doing, on a motorcycle.
