I don't think the Ebay seller is claiming it's an FE.
He's called it a 900 SS/FE, put in the description " It is basically a red FE", then listed the FE type parts that are on it.

 

The advert is very ambiguous.
I read it that it started life as an FE, but at some stage had the plastics replaced or resprayed.
Another way of reading it is that it started life as an SS and had all the parts added including an FE numbered plate on the top yoke, but then didn't bother getting the plastics correctly coloured.

I'm not interested in it, but I guess a chat with the owner might throw some light on it, unless you can determine provenance from the frame and engine numbers.

 

I read it that way, and don't think he's trying to pass it off as anything but a modified SS.

It looks like a nice useable modified bike to me, a little expensive, but some of those mods would be costly to add to a standard SS if that's what you wanted.
