Check Your Swing (arm)

  1. My Swing Arm is Back!!!!
    Exactweld Racing in East Grinstead did a superb job and they took a bunch of photos to show what they did. Happy to share them with you all. Interesting to see that the piece was hanging on by a small amount of material. These chaps know their stuff! NOTE TO ALL - They recommend only needing around 5 lb ft of Torque (which is around 6.7NM).
    Now the weekend will be spent in the Shed!

  3. That work is absolutely fantastic, and should much stronger than the original design.
    Thanks for sharing this.
    If I’m not being to nosy what was the cost of the repair, but whatever it was it’s great value!!

  5. No doubt many hours spent on that with different stages building up the aluminium weld / drilling etc, worth every penny.

  9. Wow, that is impressively neat, and £260 sounds like a Steal, That had to be at least half a day's work. Super result.

  10. Very impressive. Nice to know there are still a few skilled people about but they are getting harder to find. Right, off to check my S/A for cracks!

  11. Check thoroughly, my Monster (braced 888) swingarm, as pictured a few posts up cracked at the clamping point on both sides.

    Bike felt very 'loose' especially under acceleration, similar to a puncture but when I stopped to check, I found the swingarm pivot had come out of one side, leaving the chain side completely unsupported, like this;

    [IMG]

    As I was close to home, I 'tapped' it back in with a rock and nursed it home to find the swingarm in this state;

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    Luckily, I had a spare, a later one from a Monster (though unbraced) and they have more material at the clamping point and, AFAIK are not prone to breaking so easily;

    [IMG]

    The extra material does mean it sits very close to the sprocket though;

    [IMG]

    So I fitted that and it has been (so far) OK.

    Minus the bracing but, I really can't notice any difference and it's got to be a decent weight reduction and I got to fit the little mudguard under the arm?

    I did take the old one to a friend who's a top welder and reckons he can fix it but he's been off work for health reasons for a while so it's still waiting for repair.

    The old 851/888 swingarms were prone to this which, I assume is why they beefed up that area for the Monster which uses the same swingarm design.
