Ducati Monster 695 06. 21000 miles. Morning all, My speedo has become possessed, not long after I bought the bike the needle would jump about a little, messed with the wires from the speed sensor by the swing arm and that seemed to sort it for a while. Now it's back and it's gone do lally this time, I'd lose the speedo altogether then get the steady orange EML light on, then the speedo comes back and the light goes off, it was getting worse and worse and jumping all over the place, so I disconnected the sensor. I hope its the sensor but to be safe I've stripped the clocks down and cleaned the pcb with isopropyl, there was some slight corrosion but nothing too bad. Is there any way for me to test the speed sensor? It has three wires can, I assume one is 12v, one earth and one signal? Are there any tests on the multimeter I can run to see if it's functioning correctly?
On my old 990 KTM warning lights came on and the rev needle swept wildly side to side like a windscreen wiper and it turned out the battery terminals were loose. Cleaning, tightening and greasing fixed it.
An educated guess is the fault lies in the potentiometer within the dash unit which drives the speedo needle around the display face. It may be worth you contacting Carmo.nl (they have a UK ‘branch’ too I believe to get around customs/vat issues for their customers). They’ll be able to test it and most likely fix it.
I've got a speed sensor arriving today hopefully, I thought @ £35 it was worth the gamble to knock that out of the equation, if that doesnt work I'll contact Carmo, cheers.
Well so far so good with the "new" speed sensor, a good couple of days testing and it seems to have done the trick. Will keep you posted of any developments.
