2013 848(with fully functioning suspension. chortle) sat for a while but battery fairly new and in a good state of charge. no warning lights on dash and fuel pump primes. press the button. zero. not so much as a click. i'm heading out shortly to check power supplies to the starter relay ect. any pointers much appreciated.
Finm.. this is a busman's holiday on a bus for you You know the answers here as well as i do. Anyway:- First try bypassing all with a jump lead (carefully!) from battery positive to starter terminal. I connect battery end of jump lead last as don't mind erosion on the battery*. If above works then look at solenoid/wiggle small connector etc. Is it clicking when you push starter button on handlebars? Finally, if you suspect handlebar switch then take a live to small connection on solenoid to bypass it and see if it works. *if this doesn't work then you know it's starter or earth route or battery or battery connections. ** forgot a relay or two in there also - you know these better than me!!
What about that switch on the handle bars above the starter switch have you inadvertently pressed it.
so did CrystalJohn at a petrol station once, and called the AA out! I once rode (a chap called) Phil's 900 SSIE and turned it off at the handlebar switch and he also thought that something was was wrong when he came to ride it home. For some reason I've never had a problem which surprises me.
i've done it. posted about it on here last year. right. that's the problem with diagnostics init. you want to prove the fault. not inadvertently fix something which will no doubt return at a later date. i dont want to be wiggling shit on the off chance i get temporary continuity in a circuit. removed the necessary fairing. checked for battery voltage going to the solenoid the main lead to and from, and fuses (using a test light, you got to put these mofo's under load) fuses good, power going to the solenoid on the main battery lead but nothing going to the starter. just out of curiosity pressed the starter button and i got a small kick. Boo. fag, caffeine then check the connector on the switching side of solenoid next. without disturbing anything else. fug me it's tight in there. got to get this done before it goes full scortchio.
done. unless there's more than one issue, a bad contact in the starter switch. i got a lil side tracked during this procedure. i started to feel as if it had a broken wire going to the starter solenoid on the main loom side of the connector for the solenoid. just at the tight bend below the battery box. in my experience, if a wire is going to break, it's going to be on a tight bend. doing this single handed, trying to hold a test light at the plug while pressing the button, i found the power supply to be coming and going as i manipulated the loom. i think what i may have been doing as i was wiggling the loom i was also ever so slightly coming back off the switch. with the repeated coming on and off the switch i may have created a wee sweet spot in the switch. push as normal. nada. come back slightly, boom. this bike badly needs the full bhuna. done by somebody competent and with time on their hands. worst thing you can ever do to any vehicle is to leave it standing. Doh.
i guess the upshot to this is that i rectified a couple of issues i found on the way in. bolts missing from the rad mount. plug for the rectifier 90% disconnected. but no burning. nice. just out of interest, would any of these components be removed/disconnected during a full service/fluid change/t.belt renewal?
