Hi all my neutral light is on permanently. We're will I find the switch, to see if that's broke cheers Bryan
It's to the rear right of the engine behind the foot brake , it might just want the shim altering. Steve
Before you remove it altogether try turning it out half a turn at a time, if that works you can fit l thicker washer. Steve
If the bike in question is an S4R, then it is not a switch, rather its a spring loaded contact with the shift drum.
Which switches the natural light on and off and can be cured as my previous post if adjustment is the problem, it could be a broken switch or a chafed wire also.
Earlier models were indeed a switch with two wires, the switch being activated by contact with a cam on the shift drum, these needed to be set up as per your post. The later ones are single wire and function by making an electrical path thru the shift drum and do not require the set up of the two wire type.
And when the single wire switch is in continuous contact with the drum the light will be on hence a need to shim it out.
It is in continuous contact with the drum, a tufnol strip in the drum insulates the contact when the drum is in a gear position. The circuit to ground is made through the drum, the ECU detects this current flow and provides the signal to the neutral light. The 'switch' is a spring loaded plunger with about 5mm of travel and is similar to a brush arrangement in an electric motor.
My apologies, the Haynes book is wrong. Presumably if the op has this type of switch it must be faulty or have an earth fault.
Hi all ive just noticed that there used to be a yellow wire that pushed onto a screw thread on the back of the engine, for some reason it is totally missing, I've looked all over the bike, took tank, rear seat, everything I can off. But still can't find it would that be the wire for the light cheers Bryan
It seems likely that it is the neutral switch wire, as the switch is located on the back of the engine.
I only have a 996 wiring diagram which does show a yellow wire from that switch. If it is not connected then I would have thought the neutral light would be off as the switch completes the earth circuit. Steve
The wires missing all together. Was there. But vanished now cant even find we're it should be coming from. Really strange
Cheers mate found were the wire was, re routed it and put it correct. Another problem, the indicators work, but the symbol on the dash. Doesn't. Didn't work before the neutral light, so now onto this problem
