Hi I'm considering viewing a 916 I have seen for sale. I've owned an 848 Evo and now a monster 1100 Evo but always fancied a 916. I started building one a few years ago but never finished it. Would somebody kindly list a few 916 specific mechanical things to look out for and originality of bodywork spec for the year. For instance the Mirrors are red, is this correct for a 1997 P plate? I know that the plating on the rockers is a big issue, what else is there? The bike is running Termis and ECU, is currently on 23000 miles but looks well and seems to have good service history. Bike is up for £4.6k atm. any advice would be much appreciated. Regards Haydn
This is a far better spec. up for £4750 Makeucati Model:996BP Description THis lovely example of the Iconic 996 has been offered for sale by its owner, it has a list of accessories too long to list, have a look at the pictures. too name a few: Magnesium Marchesini:- 3.50x17 Frt & 6.00x17 Rear Brembo Radial Caliper Conversion Berringer Discs Slipper Clutch Long list of Carbon Brembo Radial Master Cylinders And so on Service History List of Receipts MotoCorse - Used Bikes
Red mirrors: not original It looks like a BP (dual seat) and has BP subframe (gold colour with passenger footrest lugs) - shouldn't have a number board. I don't think it should have adjustable span levers as standard (for a BP). Regulator and generator issues are well known. Should have had a recall on the rear wheel spindle (Ultrasonic inspection for cracks plus foc replacement if cracked) No need for "ECU" with Termis - simple chip change will do. Check what has been done. R
Hi Hayden, There are loads of buying threads on here, main issues in summary are electrics (rectifier and wiring) leading to other issues, rockers (as you said), oil pressure switches failing etc, nothing really major and loads have been talked about on here so lots of help. Mileage or lack of does not seem to help the early bikes (cam belt probs) and not being warmed up properly is one of the crucial factors with the rocker wear (plus crap chrome plating, but this seemed to be worse on the 99> bikes) That one looks mint, FSH is always nice and a recent belt change sweetens the deal !
Thanks for the quick replies. Ill have a look at that too. I'm after an original bike though which hasn't been messed with as I plan on keeping this one for a very long time. The Termignoni stickers do not look genuine so makes me wonder if the they really are Termi's. A few other bits I've noticed are good screen bolts and Dzus fairing bolts. Please post any you come across. Thanks Haydn
the first one looks nice as does the second one. the first appears more orignal. non original bits (not that it really matters) are the gold screen screws, frame plugs, and the carbon. the second has had loads more chucked at it. they are both bips (entry level model, but still great), but the second one has been dressed up a bit more to look like a strada/SP. theyre both worth a look, but the second looks better value, however, for my liking its a bit too pissed about (brembo radials etc) but thats a personal opinion. Also, for me personally, i would always go for a 916 because its a 916 and therefore the original bike of them all. Its said that the very earliest (94/95) are the best of the bunch, as, during the cagiva era, they were essentially handbuilt in much smaller numbers, and although arguably less consistent, they have a greater attention to detail and do not suffer the flaking rocker issues as everything was done in house at the time. for me the 94/95 are the greatest of the line.
First one for me. Looks nice n original. Every 916 has a few small mods. Theres nothing irreversible on there. 23k looks good too. Its been ridden. If its got a full service history and has been in good constant use then it looks fine to me. I absolutely adore my 916. Sometimes I hate the bitch when she gets heavy and hot in heavy traffic but then the road opens and its all worth the occasional cooked gonad. I dont want kids anyway. I aint letting no freeloading little bastards get their sticky little fingers on her.
buy the first one if you want something that's gonna be worth something...(haggle on the price a bit) the first is a REAL 916, the second seems to be a 996 pretending to be a 998
the smooth 998 side panels do nothing for me..just my personal taste. An utterly bog standard 916 is a bit boring on the other hand, but one has to be careful not to remove the essence of the original machine, or try to make it look 'modern'..im not a fan of clear indicators and 1098 wheels on them...yes they still look sexy, but suddenly its like you dont want it to be a 916 anymore and wish you had a 1098 etc.. i have the magnesium wheels on mine, and take it from me, they are a pain WHEN they get chipped..no one, but no one wants to touch them. the price i paid for mine and the amount ive chucked at her over the years, i couldve bought a newer, later, 'better' model..but for me, the 916 was the dream bike, the poster fantasy... its arguable that the later 996 Texas Pacific bikes were better, but i feel that the early Cagiva bikes were built to a standard, where as the later ones were built to a price....awesome though they are... if you dont fancy either of these, then stick around and wait..you cant go anywhere on it at the moment anyway...it'll be worth it..just make sure youve got the cash ready to make your move when the right one comes along. Nothing, but nothing would ever prize mine away from me...and as Bootsam says, these bitches are utter hell in traffic...pure agony..every joint will ache, you'll have cramp, your sperm will die from heat (whats not riddled in your leathers that is)..but when you both get out on some open road....then , its a whole different story..so involving...i actually, genuinely love mine...like actual 'love'...
I think it 'looks' mint, but 23k is too many miles for a standard 916 up at £4600. The mirrors aren't original no, but the fairing decals indicate genuine original fairings. Others have mentioned the main things but also look at the sprocket Cush drive Very carefully!!! Just look up 'ducati John' on Google and it will tell u most of what u need to know. Ps... I really think for that money you could get a 996 without too many issues.
Me personally, 23k means a good solid bike to me, reliable and a bike thats been used and loved. Mine has 25k. It had 5k when I got her. 916 > 996  The 996 is just a copy. Hehe. cue arguments, slanderous accusations and in-fighting. 23k if the cush drive was dodgy it'd been sorted by now. Mine happened at 5k. The only other issue is a plug on the crank that wiggles out. Fortunately mine was sorted at 18k when Daisy went in for the Full Monty at Snells. Other than that just the rectifier/regulator cooks but this is an easy fix and plenty of mods available to sort it. Buy the 916 and join the 'cool' gang. Girls will flock to you and wealth will fall from the skies at your feet. Your todger will get bigger too. This is all true.
All are fair points, I agree that nothing wrong with 20k as I was always advised to buy a higher mileage bike as it's had regular use, although I still think £4600 is steep, unless of course it's coming with a complete full Monty service which is worth it's weight in gold.
916's are becoming very very collectable I've noticed. They sunk as low as 3k a while back but have been steadily increasing. He's asking 4.6 but I'd wave 4k under his nose and go to 4.4 then walk away. It would though for that money need full history and I would check everything. Full monty was the best mod on my 916. Bike felt tight and responsive when i picked her up and she still feels good and tight now. I recommend it. Snells are ace. The 916 is one bike that will never go out of fashion. You will hug her and caress her and love her. Just do it as someone with infinitely more advertising nous once said.
depends what you want i guess. do you want a tricked out bike go for the second one, looks like it has some nice parts for that price. but i also do not really like the radial brakes on the older 916's. do you want a more original one go for the first one. i like the first one more myself. i have a '94 916 myself with some carbon parts on it,but i can get it back stock if i want. henk!!!
I would be tempted to go for the first one as well and put the mirrors back to black - wouldn't cost much to do. Girls really WILL flock to you like Bootsam says - these bloody things really DO turn heads!...oh, and turn the Dzus around the right way if you get the 916 - make the D bit be at the back of the spindle from the direction of travel!...it looks nicer and just right in my opinion...the D bit facing forward is just wrong!. 4.6K is a bit steep though, although not a surprise as it's coming from a dealer. But you'd probably get one a good 6 or 7 hundred quid cheaper if you bought it privately...ooh, but it does shine doesn't it?!....but that said....mmmm....the 996 IS the slightly better machine!....just a thought...
I bought the first one. Spent 1.5 hours going around it. And I didn't even start it for the first 45 mins. Very honest bike. No signs of crash damage anywhere not even under the front yoke where the clip ons bolt on. Cush drives we're fine, battery was showing 12.6v before start up, 13.7v when running, main beam on sent it down to 13.2v. All the wiring and plugs seemed ok too. Its had over £2k spent in the last two years including the paint. Forks were serviced last year too. Bodywork is almost perfect with only the odd small mark, uk bike, all the numbers matched. Warmed up fine and started fine when warm too. Very happy. The bike was actually up for £4690. Negotiated for a while and made a deal at£4.5k including belts and fluid service at Ducati Leeds with delivery to my door. So the plan is. 1. Remove most if the non original parts apart from the carbon bits and open clutch cover which I quite like. 2. Source original wing mirrors. 3. Source original screen torx bolts. 4. Send it to JHP for a health check. 5. Then work my way around bike replacing anything that looks a bit tired. Cheers Haydn
Congrats I would've dug deeper in my pocket for this. Ducati 748R For Sale (2001) on Car And Classic UK [C444274]
