Okay so I'm laying on my deathbed with Man Flu in full flow trying to make sense of tyre profile and rim size. I have a 2001 748R that has, according to the owner's handbook, a 3.5" front with a 120x70 and a 5.5" rear with a180x55. As part of the "Winter Project" in preparation for the track I will be fitting a pair of Marchesini mag alloy 5 spoke road and track wheels. I've been reading through the tyre threads and there is a lot of good information but there is a basic gap in my knowledge - where is the 3.5" or 5.5" measured ? I have a suspicion that my rear Marchesini will be a 6" so the next question is will an 180x55 fit or will I have to go up to a 190x50 ? Any help/advice will be much appreciated. Andy
Bump. Now become a more urgent issue because I have been told that my 60th birthday present in January is going to be a 4 day Focussed Events track event at Almeria. Where's Cranker V2 when you need him ? Andy
Most track orientated tyres are now in 55 section. 190/55 will give a good profile with a good contact patch a lean angles. Check you ride height with you current wheels and then again with new wheel/tyre combination
So, final question for this thread. My choices of tyre for Spain is from Dunlop GP Racer D211, Metzler Racetec Interact K2 (F), K1 (R) or my previous choice Pirelli Diablo Supercorse SC2 (F), SC1 (R) or the newer Supercorse SP. I know the suggestion was KR slicks but I've never used them and don't believe I have the confidence to maintain the temperature for constant performance. I can get all these tyres relatively locally and the right tyre rather than cost is the influence. Thanks, Andy
if its a 6" rim then 190 up if 5.5 rim them 180/55 is the correct size accorinding to all the tyre ppl i speak to, and it does turn in faster rim width is measured inside bead edge to inside bead edge (akaik) i use 190/50 and 190/55 all the time on 5.5" rim, I dont think 195/65 will fit on a 5.5" rim as cranker says go with what you like/can afford. al above are plenty good boots i like dunlop d212 pro at the moment, they are expensive but stick like glue and last last and last (they are same technology as the KR slicks but treaded) 1 x 3 compound front 1 x 5 (or softer 4) compound rear will see you through 4 days at almeria no problem
