Sounds like you are getting a good example for your money Haydn, you must be grinning like a Cheshire cat to yourself! Are you going to put a mono seat on her? or leave it as bog standard bp?
Thanks david, yeah I'm pretty chuffed to be fair. Spent quite a few hours on eBay already looking for bits. Not sure about the mono yet, the bikes been painted and the finish is really something so if I bought the mono I would definitely have to get it painted to match. I will be taking the girlfriend on the back now and again and with it not being a quick change like an 848 cowl I'm undecided. I presume it's possible to fit the mono bodywork onto the BP subframe?
Its a 5 minute swap from bp to mono as long as both bp and mono seats are fully equipped with their own lights etc. You can buy a cowl for the bp to make it mp too if you wish. In my view Ducati superbikes are all monoposto and anyone who volunteers to get on the back must be nuts.
Well it's arrived, 7:30 this morning. Will take some pics tomorrow. This thing doesn't half have some presence in the garage!
Cheers and claps! you won't EVER regret it Haydn, you really won't! I LOVE that! presence in the garage indeed It's the same feeling as being an eight year old at Christmas as far as I can remember!...
Insured it this morning and went for a 30 mile trip. Took me a while to get used to it as I've been riding the monster evo on the road for last year. The monster is really easy to ride and I soon realised that the 916 requires a bit more input. Think it could benefit for a slipper clutch as I had it fish tailing a few times. But what a bike, really involving, felt like the bike was enjoying the trip as much as I was! I thought I had picked up a seagle like Lorenzo at Phillip Island last weekend because I couldn't work out what everyone was starring at, then it dawned on me. I had a few thumbs up, people hanging out the windows of their cars and people stopping what they were doing for a quick look. However the ride highlighted a few issues. 1.The neutral light has a mind of its own, it's always on when it neutral but sometimes stays on when in another gear, it flashes, fades away and comes back on. I need to check out the pickup. 2. Some times the bike jumps out of 1st and back into some sort of neutral. 3. Under heavy braking I can feel some juddering so I think the discs my be slightly warped. New discs will be added to the long list of winter work. Cheers Haydn
Haha yeah, sorted now. I had one of those battles with browser refresh and auto correct spelling. Doh!
So glad for you mate, i really am...Ive had mine for years and she's a keeper...i had a little blast on her yesterday, and as usual, got the same reactions as you..i even had a lycra cyclist raise his hand as i pootled in the opposite direction... Anyway, the slipper thing...you may need one, but without wanting to sound patronising, just make sure you give her a good blip on the downchanges..if you dont, then you might get problems..ive only ever had fishtailing when ive been absolutely wringing her neck at high revs...so make sure it isnt pilot error..getting the levers etc correctly adjusted will certainly help. This also goes for the false neutrals..sounds like its the same thing as problem1...adjust the selector and give an assertive gear change..she'll slot in like a rifle bolt..these bikes need to be ridden and it takes quite a bit of technique to get right...which, of course, is the joy. The neutral light could also be part of the same issue, but easily could also be a dodgy sender, or a bit of dirt etc...i never trust my neutral light! Once you click with the bike she will be so rewarding. I think Bootsam said on another thread, its amazing how many blokes keep their 916's, even when buying a later bike..its probably one of the most common 'keepers' amongst Ducatisti... I could've taken my Tric out yesterday instead.... but i didnt...
Neutral light should be an easy fix, it is adjusted by altering the size of washer, it might want a slightly thicker one, or a thinner one, try undoing the switch by half a turn. Enjoy your new toy. Steve
Thanks for the advise. Ill give it a go, your right first time out and I just need to click with it. Has anybody got any tips for cleaning up the swingarm, I took the carbon cover off yesterday and its in a right state underneath. I've tried, carb cleaner, citrus based cleaner, Scottish bright and auto sol but nothing will touch it, it's ingested into the metal. The swingarm is also more of a bare silver than the grey colour I've seen on others. cheers Haydn
I agree with Funky. You certainly need to be positive with the gearbox, it is rather agricultural . I've, thankfully, only snaked my last 998 once coming down a slip road to a large empty roundabout - five pence piece, dustbin lid! Don't have that problem with my latest as she has a slipper - but be respectful on the down shifts! I'm sure everyone has their own method - I just used to keep in a higher gear for longer than I would have on an IL4 when changing down and always make a point of blipping the throttle. It worked for me...
Glad you like your 916 although I find the standard ones needing a lot of work to improve things so would have opted for the second crankerv2 posted up. For anyone else looking for 916 or 996. Id defo buy the second link bike at that price if I was after a standard one also.Easy to strip the aftermarket stuff off (mainly bolt on) and sell it for good money on fleabay.Carbon fairings and belly pan, carbon airtubes, carbon airbox,is that a carbon headlight holder, mono sps seat unit and nice marchesini wheels would see a fair bit of cash coming back to you.Ive seen good condition mono seat units with seat pad fetch £300 + on flebay for starters and I recently sold a carbon headlight surround for £300 on that site no problem, nice marchesinis £500+. The standard bits could then be sourced off fleabay again but for a pittance compared to good aftermarket stuff.I reckon a good £1500 - £2000 could be had back in the pocket of who ever buys the second bike maybe more if you sell the radial brakes and fork bottoms.Probably get the standard bits for a couple of hundred quid if that. That 996 would then owe the new owner about £3,000.Imho the 996 engine is better especialy the ones fitted to 97/98 916 bikes. Just spotted bike n02 also has radial master cyclinders and slipper clutch.More ££££ back for someone after a standard bike.
looks nice. bought this one today full service history well looked after 13,000 on clock payed 3700. would I still have to change the belts every 2 years even if she hasn't done the mileage
